From USD 3156

Explore the classic Alpine adventure around the Alps tallest peak! Our week-long tour takes you on a remarkable journey through Switzerland, France, and Italy. Traverse stunning landscapes, winding paths, and breathtaking waterfalls, all while experiencing the charm of cozy mountain chalets and picturesque towns. This is a one-of-a-kind expedition, a harmonious blend of three countries, a symphony of towering peaks, lush greenery, and exhilarating beauty. Join us on this unforgettable journey.

Highlights

  • Hike through one of the most famous areas in the Alps
  • Cozy accommodations in France, Italy and Switzerland
  • Small, charming alpine villages
  • Spectacular views and mighty mountains

Embark on an awe-inspiring journey around Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps at 4,809 meters. This remarkable round-trip hike guides you through high mountain passes, picturesque valleys, charming villages, rustic mountain chalets, and inviting restaurants. Along the way, you'll be treated to breathtaking vistas of some of the region's mightiest mountains and colossal glaciers.

While this adventure presents its challenges, including some strenuous days with substantial elevation gains, worry not as we provide luggage transport between accommodations, allowing you to travel light with only a daypack (with the exception of Day 4 at Rifugio Bonatti). Your journey begins and ends with comfortable stays in a Chamonix hotel, and in between, we'll rest in cozy mountain chalets. While we occasionally take advantage of buses and lifts, most of the time, we'll be exploring the incredible terrain surrounding Mont Blanc on foot.

Day 2:First Trail Day

We start with a short bus ride to Les Houches and take the lift up to Bellevue (1781 m). The first stage gives a good impression of the magnificent surroundings that await us throughout the week, and from the top of the lift we walk for about eight hours in hilly terrain to the mountain hut (today's highest point is about 2000 m), Refuge de Nant Borrant (1460 m) where we are going to spend the night. Along the way, we get a magnificent view of the Bionnassay glacier from a "Nepalese suspension bridge", we pass the famous chapel "Notre Dam de la Gorge" and the last stretch towards the chalet we follow an ancient, Roman road.

Day 3:Over Passes to Panoramic Views

Another great – and the longest – leg of the tour awaits us this day. We will cross two passes, Col de la Croix (2483 m) and Col de Fours (2665 m), on our way down to La Ville des Glaciers (1789 m). If we are lucky with the weather, we have a panoramic view of several of the surrounding mountains (including Mont Pourri 3779 m), and the whole stage takes about eight hours. We spend the night in a charming mountain chalet..

Day 4:To Italy

Today we pack overnight clothes in our rucksack, because the luggage transport cannot reach us tonight. From the chalet, we go up to the Col de la Seigne (2516 m), one of the most beautiful mountain passes on the route. The pass forms the border between France and Italy - and here we are really close to the peaks Mont Blanc, Noire de Peutrey and Grand Jorasses! After taking in the panoramic view, we descend to the end of the Mirage glacier in Val Veni and jump on a local bus to Courmayeur (1306 m), where we have a lunch break and enjoy good Italian coffee. After lunch we take the bus a little further and go from Val Ferrett up approx. 400meters in altitude to the mountain chalet, where we spend the night.

Day 5:Onward to Switzerland

Yesterday we went from France to Italy, and now the trip continues to Switzerland. It is relatively easy walking in the morning, before we start the ascent to Col Du Ferrett (2537 m). Here we say "Arriverderci" to Italy and descend to the village of La Fouly (1594 m above sea level), where we are greeted by a beautiful cultural landscape with animals, cedars and beautiful flower meadows. We stretch our legs at a cafe in La Fouly before finding our accommodation for the night. Depending on whether we stay in La Fouly or Champex, we either take a local bus in the afternoon to Champex and spend the night there, or we spend the night in La Fouly and take the local bus to Champex the next morning.

Day 6:Back to France

We start walking in Champex (1466 m), surrounded by Swiss cows and beautiful Swiss cultural landscapes. Today's destination is Trient (1279 m). We begin with a gentle walk along the road before tackling steep forested hills. Eventually, we’re rewarded with stunning views of a landscape that feels quite different from what we’ve seen so far on the trek. This is part of the original TMB route. We cross the wooded mountain toward Trient (1279 m), passing the beautifully situated mountain café at Alpage de Bovine along the way. In Trient, a private taxi will be waiting to take us back to France and our accommodation for the night.

Day 7:Final Trail Day

From the chalet we now go up over the Chamonix valley, on the Gran Balcon Sud – one of the most beautiful paths in the Alps. In a couple of places, the mountain sides are relatively steep, and we get the help of ladders to help us ascend. We have a panoramic view towards Mt Blanc on the opposite side of the valley, and the tour goes via the famous Lac Blanc before we wander down through the forest to the center of Chamonix. Here we celebrate the trip with a proper farewell dinner!

Physical level

3/6 Physical

Some segments of the journey may prove challenging. It's essential to possess a solid level of fitness prior to departure. Persistence will be required in reaching the trip's goal.

Comfort level

3/6 Comfort

Simple accommodations, such as cabins or guesthouses, often with multi-bed rooms. Sometimes with bunk beds and often with a shared bathroom.

Risk level

3/6 Risk

Activities/trips with some risk. Certain incidents may occur, and they may be of such a nature that they may require professional help.

Training and Preparations

The week trip around Mont Blanc is relatively tough - with many relatively long ascents and descents. We walk six days in a row and often at an altitude of between 2,000 and 3,000 metres.

A normal stage is around 8 hours, and on several of the days we have more than 1000 meters of ascent. We get luggage transport between all accommodations, except for one night. Thus, most days we only go with a daypack.

You should be used to walking and in normal good physical shape to participate. Longer hikes in the countryside and, for example, multiday backpacking trips  in the mountains are good preparations for such a trip.

Visas, Vaccinations and Health

Before embarking on our journey together, we kindly remind all tour participants to check their respective country's visa status and vaccination requirements.

Ensuring your travel documents are in order is a crucial step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months after the date of return.

If you are over 67, you should have a thorough medical check-up before the trip. Make the doctor aware that it is a trip with physical exertion and where we move off the beaten track.

It is important that you fill in all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of before and during the trip. Relevant health information that may have an impact on the tour must also be communicated to the guide at the start of the tour. Note - If you are on regular medication, have known allergies or the like, you must always have your personal medication with you.

Additional Information

We stay two nights at a hotel in Chamonix, where we start and end the tour. Along the way, we stay in mountain chalets which are relatively simple, and we live in dormitories.

There is not necessarily access to shower facilities in all the mountain chalets. In the hotels we stay at, we stay in twin/double rooms. At the hotels, it is possible to book single rooms, if they have them available.

Allergies and dietary needs are not necessarily as well taken care of. If you have allergies or special dietary needs, it may be good to buy and bring some extra food from Chamonix and from the villages along the way. We cannot guarantee that the chalets have food to cover special food needs. Although we notify the chalets in advance, this should be communicated to each individual cabin when you arrive.

Equipment list

This list is intended as a guideline, so that we have what we need regardless of the weather we get on the trip. Remember that you can also get used hiking equipment that works perfectly.
