Many people wonder what it takes to go on a trip with Norrøna Adventure to high mountains. Here's an introduction to hiking at altitude - what to expect and how to prepare with the right clothing, equipment and training.Start training well in advance of departure. We recommend long, steep day hikes in the mountains or overnight backpacking trips as good preparation for the trip.We also recommend that you read a little about the country and about the trip you are going on before departure. This makes the experience more complete. If you need tips, we have a training plan for high mountains, feel free to ask us about this.

Visas, Vaccinations and Health

2-3 pairs. Wool or synthetic material.

Fleece or wool.

Warm, light, and long - down is strongly preferred. It should be big enough to fit over everything else, have a hood (preferably helmet-compatible), and cover the butt.

Down or synthetic insulation. Should be roomy, making them easy to wear over shell pants, preferably with a full-length side zipper.

Gore-Tex or similar. Must have a decent hood, and hold out wind and rain. Should have space for midlayers underneath. Ventilation under the arms is recommended.

Warm hat for cold days.

The overmittens should be roomy and extend well up the forearm. They should be windproof and ideally handle some moisture. They need to provide a good grip, even with the inner mittens inside. The inner mittens should be thick and warm, preferably made of wool.

High gaiters for protection against wind, snow, moisture, and icing on boots and laces. Mandatory if you don’t have ski boots or pants with integrated gaiters.

Footwear

Large, warm boots with removable inner boot, for example Millet Everest or La Sportiva Olympus Mons. If you know for sure that your feet don't freeze easily, the Scarpa Phantom 6000, La sportiva G2, or Kayland 6001 can also work. In any case, the boot should be roomy so there is room for thick socks.

Solid hiking boots for winter use and enough space for thick socks. Must be stiff enough for crampons.

Equipment

Avoid bringing a suitcase, they are more difficult to transport between hotels.

Comfort temperature rating of at least -20°C. Both down and synthetic are fine, remember to pack it in a waterproof bag. A liner can increase the comfort temperature.

Light. Have to be foldable or telescope.

Remember new/extra batteries.

Personal medicines and, for example, band-aids, blister plaster, sports tape, throat lozenges, nasal drops, Paracetamol/Ibuprofen, stomach regulators, etc.
We need to know about all medicines you are taking, in case something happens.

Tooth brush, tooth paste, small towel, ear plugs, wet wipes, biodegradable soap, etc.

High SPF, 30-50. Remember chapstick for lips and nose.

Good sunglasses with dark lenses, that do not let light in between the frame and the face. Grade 4 glass.

We recommend a small and light alpine harness. For example Petzl Altitude or Tour or Black Diamond Colouir.

3 of them.

Packing tips

This list is intended as a guideline, so that we have what we need regardless of the weather we get on the trip. Remember that you can also get used outdoor equipment that works perfectly. Get in touch if you have any questions. TIP: We recommend that you have the most important equipment in your hand luggage, for example hiking boots and gore-tex jacket/trousers.

While this trip is generally best climbed in the dry season (Dec-Jan & Jun-Jul) there can still be occasional rain and snowstorms, especially at higher altitudes. The weather can be unpredictable, so it's essential to be prepared for changing conditions and pack accordingly.

When packing, versatile and weather-adapted equipment should be prioritized. Pack light, moisture-wicking clothing for warmth, and several layers for cooler evenings and mornings. A good waterproof/windproof jacket is important.
