Trolltunga, Preikestolen and Folgefonna glacier

The three most spectacular hikes

Trolltunga, Preikestolen and Folgefonna glacier

The three most spectacular hikes

From USD 3346

This Adventure Tour combines the most famous hiking destinations in Norway: Trolltunga and Preikestolen. En route, we will walk within Hardangervidda, hike one of the biggest glaciers in Norway, and explore some local gems along the way.

Highlights

  • Hike the famouse Trolltunga and Preikestolen.
  • Hike on Hardangervidda, one of Norway's wildest National Parks and home to native Reindeer herds.
  • Explore a day on the Glacier in Folgefonna National Park roped up with helmets, ice axes, and harnesses.
  • Spend two days traveling within Hardangerfjorden from Rosendal, one of Norway's most beautiful fjords.
  • Take an express ferry up Lysefjorden (The Fjord of Light) between sheer cliffs on either side.
  • Spend a night at the unique Canvas Hotel and sleep in a comfortable "Yurt-tent"

Norway has become famous for its iconic, dramatic, and exciting viewpoints: Trolltunga, Preikestolen, and Folgfonna Glacier. These three hikes, to three of the most beautiful viewpoints in Norway, along with some more days exploring Norway's more hidden gems, make this tour one of the most dynamic and diverse tours of Norway available. Dramatic fjord views, high mountain tops, three-course dinners, traditional accommodations, Norwegian culture, and unique geological rock formations provide travelers with an exciting and well-rounded tour of South-Western Norway.

The hikes on this tour are relatively long (see the day-to-day itinerary below), and we hike every day. You need to have good physical fitness to join this tour, be prepared for hiking long days, and be willing to enjoy the drives between our hiking locations as we cover vast expanses of the Norwegian landscape. There are not a lot of downtimes as we are experiencing a vast amount of Norway in just 6 days. The tour starts and ends in Oslo, and we leave Oslo in a small group, traveling by minibus.

If you want to explore these iconic destinations, but at a slower pace, we recommend our Icons trip itinerary. We recommend that you plan an extra day in Oslo before or after the tour. Oslo is among Lonely Planet's top 10 cities on their Best in travel 2018, not to mention Europe's Greenest City of 2019, and a beautiful place to reminisce about your upcoming or past adventure with Norrøna Adventure!

Day 2:Trolltunga

People come from all over the world to experience Trolltunga, and today it's our turn! Trolltunga is a spectacular mountain formation situated 1,100 meters above sea level, and 700 meters above the lake of Ringedal. Trolltunga is a long hike (8-11 hours) - the longest hike of the trip, so we start off early in the morning (around 7 am). Even though the hike is tough, it is both doable and worth it! We will have time to relax at the top, enjoy the view, and take memorable photos on the plateau. After the hike, we will have a short drive down to our hotel in Tyssedal, and enjoy a well-deserved 3-course dinner in the evening. In the case of bad weather, we have the opportunity to swap day 2 and 3 and get the best weather possible on Trolltunga.

Day 3:Glacier Walk at Folgefonna

After breakfast, we make our way up to Folgefonna National Park and go for a full-day walk (4-6 hours) on the glacier. Hiking on the glacier plateau is not particularly hard, but it is a truly magnificent experience walking roped up on the 350m thick carpet of ice! When the weather allows, it is a spectacular view of the surrounding fjord landscape from the glacier. During this day we will walk at a gentle pace, learning how to walk as a rope team with an experienced glacial guide. In the afternoon we will drive about 1,5 hours to Rosendal, a beautiful small town by the famous Hardanger Fjord. Here we will have dinner and spend the night in the cozy Rosendal Turisthotell with its unique and charming expression.

Day 4:Preikestolen

We leave Rosendal and head towards one of the most famous mountain hikes in the world - Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock. From the hotel, we will drive for around 5-6 hours through the beautiful coastal scenery between Folgefonna and Preikestolen. During the day, there are many visitors to the plateau. Therefore, we choose to hike in the afternoon/evening; then we can enjoy an evening meal looking over the fjord after most tourists have left this popular destination. Late in the season, we might even see the sunset from here. The trek to Preikestolen is a 3-5 hour round trip, and the beautiful landscape has resulted in numerous international top rankings. Tonight, we will rest in the Preikestolen Mountain Lodge (Preikestolen Fjellstue), and sleep soundly in order to prepare for our early morning wake-up tomorrow.

Physical level

3/6 Physical

Some segments of the journey may prove challenging. It's essential to possess a solid level of fitness prior to departure. Persistence will be required in reaching the trip's goal.

Comfort level

4/6 Comfort

Simple to good quality inns, such as small family hotels, B&Bs and agrotourism (farmhouses), usually with private bathrooms.

Risk level

3/6 Risk

Activities/trips with some risk. Certain incidents may occur, and they may be of such a nature that they may require professional help.

Traning and preparations

The hardest hike is the hike to Trolltunga; it can take up to 11 hours altogether. The other days will be about 4-6 hours of hiking. You should expect to scramble and the path is rocky and slippery if it rains. You should have hiking experience in similar conditions. Good fitness and some hiking experience with a good attitude will also prepare you for this trip.

Accommodation

We stay in unique and welcoming accommodations within the area. If you are traveling alone, you will share a same-sex twin room. If you would like a single room, please request this directly for a single, additional payment of 5000NOK.

Most nights we will stay in en-suite rooms, but not all. If you want a single room we can't guarantee an en-suite room each day.

Accommodation in Oslo before and after the tour is not included- the last night of the trip on day 6 does not include accommodation. We encourage guests to spend the night in Oslo that evening. This allows guests to decompress and allows flexibility on the return time to Oslo on the last day of the tour. We recommend you book a hotel room at "Thon Hotel Opera" - where you will be dropped off at the trip end. Other recommended hotels close by will be "Clarion Hotel Oslo" or "Amerika linjen".

Other information

Due to limited space in the minibus, we ask that you bring one piece of luggage and we recommend a duffel bag, which is easier than a rolling bag to transport on this tour. We require you to bring a day pack (hip belt strongly recommended) to use when hiking for food, water, cameras, and layers.

Equipment list

This list is intended as a guideline, so that we have what we need regardless of the weather we get on the trip. Remember that you can also get used hiking equipment that works perfectly. Get in touch if you have any questions. TIP: We recommend that you have the most important hiking equipment in your hand luggage, for example hiking boots and gore-tex jacket/trousers.

Obligatory

Clothing

Not too thick, bring more layers if necessary. Top and bottom.

Wool or synthetic. Avoid cotton. Remember to allways bring dry socks with you, to prevent chafing.

We recommend thin wool.

Fleece or wool.

Down or primaloft.

Waterproof jacket and pants.

Hat or headband

Footwear

Bring waterproof shoes/boots that you are familiar with and comfortable in for technical terrain

Equipment

Avoid bringing a suitcase, they are more difficult to transport between hotels.

Personal medicines and, for example, band-aids, blister plaster, sports tape, throat lozenges, nasal drops, Paracetamol/Ibuprofen, stomach regulators, etc.
We need to know about all medicines you are taking, in case something happens.

Tooth brush, tooth paste, small towel, ear plugs, wet wipes, biodegradable soap, etc.

You should be able to bring 2-3 litres of water.

Recommended

Clothing

Thin, ultra light.

For evenings and leasure days.

If you go for a swim

Footwear

Slippers, crocs, sandals or similar.

Equipment

Light. Have to be foldable or telescope.

Toilet paper, antibac, and waste bags for the paper. Remember leave no trace.

Nuts, chocolate, energy bars, etc.

For use in the backpack to keep your equipment dry during rain.

We always recommend wool in the Norwegian Mountains, but if you already have synthetic layers and don't want to buy new ones, synthetic is okay.

Bed linen and towels are included at each accommodation.

We will provide the necessary equipment for the glacier hike (harness, ice axe, crampons, helmet). It's also possible to borrow hiking boots for the glacier hike if needed.

"I enjoyed the trip very much. Johanna was great (one of my best guides I had) and I spent a very nice holiday. The hotels were well selected and offered time to relax. I enjoyed the one in Rosendal most. The driver Tur (?) was very friendly and helpful, maybe sometimes driving too fast. I will definitely come back to travel with Hvitserk again. I enjoyed the trip very much."

"Excellent tour with tremendous scenery and a great guide. I had been looking for the right tour that offered 3 most important hiking landmarks in Norway and Norrona Hvitserik is the only agency that offers that! I am ecstatic about this tour and experience. Also 2 out of 4 hotels were luxury with gourmet food. Sauna was to die at the last hotel. Excellent tour with tremendous sceneryut you need to train for this hiking challenge, this is not for beginners!"
