  • Triglav National Park
  • Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana
  • Stunning alpine scenery
  • Opportunity to climb Mt. Triglav (2864 m)

Slovenia is the first country in the world to be designated a green destination based on the Green Destinations Criteria, and its capital has been named "European Green Capital." The country is beautifully situated in the heart of Europe, between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea. During a week-long hiking trip, we’ll experience stunning Alpine mountains, crystal-clear blue lakes, and beautiful, secluded beaches.

We’ll go on hikes lasting between 4 and 9 hours, climbing high and descending far, all while enjoying the spectacular nature surrounding us on every side, and spending the nights in cozy mountain huts along the way. We’ll wrap up in vibrant Ljubljana with a group farewell dinner. For those seeking an extra challenge, we offer an optional excursion to the country’s highest peak. On this peak - Mt. Triglav - we’ll have one IFMGA-certified mountain guide for every four participants, and we’ll be secured by ropes. We look forward to taking you to this mountain region, which is still somewhat undiscovered by Norwegians.

Day 3:Alpine terrain

Today we split into two groups: one group that hikes around the mountain, and one group that goes via the summit of Mt. Triglav if anyone wishes to take this optional add-on. The first group will continue today along an easy trail in the company of marmots and ibexes toward the picturesque mountain saddle, where we will get our first look at the famous Valley of the Seven Triglav Lakes. Weather permitting, this trip can also be extended to Mt. Kanjavec (2569 m). For those who want the optional add-on and wish to go to the summit of Mt. Triglav, this will be a long day. We will eat an early breakfast and meet the mountain guides who will accompany us on today's leg. We will have one IFMGA-certified mountain guide per 4 participants. Today's goal is Slovenia's highest mountain, Mt. Triglav. This peak can be seen from almost everywhere in the country, towering at 2864 m. The route is demanding and exposed, making it a real treat for those who want a bit of climbing. The final 300 vertical meters toward the summit are the most exposed, but we will be given a harness and helmet to clip into the Via ferrata cables. Both groups will meet up again at a mountain lodge known for its fantastic sunsets, where dinner will be served. There are no shower facilities at this lodge.

Day x:Onward to the coast, Via Ferrata, or a visit to a vineyard?

If you wish to extend your trip, we can help you with that, whether you prefer to stay a couple of extra days in Ljubljana, stay at a vineyard, climb a via ferrata, or travel down to the coast toward Piran. Piran is a picturesque coastal town known for its Venetian architecture and narrow streets. Explore the charming old town, visit St. George's Church for panoramic views, and enjoy delicious seafood at one of the town's many restaurants. Slovenia is famous for good wine, and there are several fine vineyards you can visit and stay at. The landscape is somewhat reminiscent of Tuscany with its rolling hills and vineyards as far as the eye can see. Driving distances are short in the country, so the possibilities are many! Contact us, and we will look into how we can help you.

Safety & Grading

On our trips, it is important to understand that we often will be traveling far off the beaten track. We will, of course, do everything we can to assist if anything should happen, but a potential rescue operation can be demanding. It is therefore extremely important that all participants arrive well-prepared and ready to handle unforeseen situations.

Physical level

3/6 Physical

Some segments of the journey may prove challenging. It's essential to possess a solid level of fitness prior to departure. Persistence will be required in reaching the trip's goal.

Comfort level

3/6 Comfort

Simple accommodations, such as cabins or guesthouses, often with multi-bed rooms. Sometimes with bunk beds and often with a shared bathroom.

Risk level

3/6 Risk

Activities/trips with some risk. Certain incidents may occur, and they may be of such a nature that they may require professional help.

Training and Preparations

The week-long trek in Slovenia is relatively challenging - with many and relatively long ascents and descents. We’ll hike six days in a row, often at altitudes above 2000 meters. The daily stages range from 4 to 9 hours, and on several days we’ll have more than 1000 meters of elevation gain.

We carry our own gear for the days we’re hiking in the mountains, and we recommend that you’ve done some hiking in the mountains with a backpack before this trip.

You should be experienced in hiking and in generally good physical condition to participate. Longer hikes in the countryside and, for example, “hut-to-hut” hikes or camping trips in the mountains are good preparation.

The cabins in the Slovenian Alps are relatively basic compared to DNT standards in Norway. Allergies and dietary needs are not necessarily well accommodated. If you have allergies or special dietary needs, it may be a good idea to buy and bring some extra food from Norway. We cannot guarantee that the cabins will have food to meet special dietary needs. Even though we notify the huts in advance, you should still communicate this to each individual hut upon arrival.

Visas, Vaccinations and Health

Before embarking on our journey together, we kindly remind all trip participants to check their respective country's visa status and vaccination requirements. Ensuring your travel documents are in order is a crucial step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure.

Norwegian citizens do not need a visa to enter Slovenia. Bring your passport and a copy of it. See also the current entry and visa regulations on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' country pages.

If you are over 67 years old, you should undergo a thorough medical examination before the trip. Let your doctor know that this is a trip involving physical exertion and that we’ll be traveling off the beaten path.

It is important that you complete all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of prior to and during the trip. Relevant health information that may affect the trip should also be communicated to the guide at the start of the trip. *Note* - If you are on regular medication, have known allergies or anything similar, you must always bring your personal medication with you.

See the overview on FHI´s pages on travel health advice. For vaccination and guidance, please contact Sentrum Reisemedisin: Reisemedisin.no.

Additional Information

For trips where flights are not included, please check our website to confirm that the departure is guaranteed before booking your own plane tickets. For each trip, we require a minimum number of confirmed participants before the departure can be guaranteed.

We’ll be staying three nights at a hotel, and during the mountain hike, we’ll spend four nights in relatively simple mountain cabins, in dormitory-style rooms.

Not all cabins have shower facilities, and where available, a shower costs 3–5 EUR. At the hotels, we’ll be staying in twin or double rooms. At the hotels, it is possible to request a single room, if available.

Water can be purchased at the mountain cabins, and in some places, it’s also possible to fill your bottle with water from streams we pass along the way. It is safe to drink tap water where running water is available.

On the mountain hike, we can buy lunch either from the cabin where we’re staying or at a mountain cabin along the way. There are a few dishes to choose from at the mountain cabins.

It is not always easy to get hold of gluten-free wholemeal bread, lactose-free alternatives or to accommodate other food preferences. If you have any allergies, please let us know in the registration form and we will try to accommodate you as best we can. However, we would still recommend that anyone with special dietary needs bring some alternatives in the form of, for example, a packet of crispbread, energy bars or similar that you know you can eat.

Equipment such as a climbing harness and helmet for climbing Mt. Triglav will be provided locally.

We don’t need a sleeping bag, as there are blankets in all the mountain huts.

We recommend bringing small travel-size soap and shampoo for use at the mountain huts, as well as a small, quick-drying towel. (On September trips, a thin sleeping bag might be comfortable. Check the weather forecast before you travel.)

We recommend bringing some dried fruit, energy bars, or snacks from Norway before departure, as these can be hard to find during the mountain hike. If you have allergies or special dietary needs, it may be a good idea to bring some extra food (crispbread, etc.) from Norway.
