Some trips offer so much more. Our Slovenian adventure went from snow-capped peaks and a steep climb up Triglav, to fine wine, ocean breezes, and Michelin dining. In a matter of days, we experienced dramatic nature, warm hospitality, fairytale-like caves, and hidden town gems that kept surprising us.
As soon as we landed in Ljubljana, it was clear that this trip was going to be something special. Soaring mountains framed the small and efficient airport, and after a quick walk through baggage claim, our local partner, Rok, was waiting for us. The original plan was to drive to Bled and explore the stunning area at a relaxed pace before heading into the mountains the following day. But the weather had other ideas; Rok informed us that a storm front was rolling in, and we needed to head straight up the mountain immediately.
Having been awake since 04:00 AM and with a layover behind us, it was simply a matter of gritting our teeth. We changed into our hiking gear right next to the car in the forest parking lot and set off toward the Kredarica hut—a 1,600-meter vertical ascent from where we started. Trailing behind 190 cm tall Rok and my colleague - a literal mountain goat - it felt like we were running up the slope. Our target for the evening, the Kredarica hut, sits just beneath Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak. On the way up, we enjoyed brilliant sunshine and clear blue skies, creating a magical contrast against the white limestone mountains surrounding us. By the time we reached the hut, after what can only be described as a 3-hour mountain marathon, dusk was falling, and a dense fog started rolling in.
A delicious dinner was served at the hut, and our energy levels bounced right back. However, the weather forecast for the next day offered little comfort. Snow and whiteout conditions were on the horizon, and Rok insisted on a 05:00 AM wakeup call if we wanted any chance of reaching the summit. Sleep is overrated anyway, right?
Visibility was next to none, but led by our mountain guide, we made our way up to Triglav’s iconic summit. The route involves a few sections of light scrambling, but we were safely roped up. Spirits were high when we reached the top, where my colleague handed out Norwegian milk chocolate even without a view! Afterward, we headed back down to Kredarica for breakfast and packing.
We then set off down the mountain toward Vodnikov Dom, one of the mountain huts we will be staying at during this trip. The landscape shifts constantly, and our cameras were working overtime. We continued all the way down to where the car was parked. Next stop: a well-deserved lunch in Bled at a Michelin-recognized restaurant. Going straight from rugged trails to white tablecloths and fine wine was quite the contrast. Slovenia has truly earned its place on the international culinary map, and we instantly saw why. Afterward, we headed to Rok’s hometown and checked into a charming Bed & Breakfast. Finally, a hot shower!
The next day, the Škocjan Caves were on our itinerary - an underground adventure that truly blew us away. Walking several kilometers beneath the earth’s surface along paths carved into the rock, with a roaring river far below and thunder rumbling in the sky above us, was simply awe-inspiring. From there, we drove on to Vipava for another Michelin-recommended restaurant. It was an intimate little venue with just five tables, and I can honestly say I have never tasted a better T-bone steak! We spent the evening at a local winery where we stayed overnight. We enjoyed a wine tasting paired with local cheeses and cured meats, accompanied by a guided tour of the cellar by the winemaker himself. A truly magical way to end the day.
Our final day started with breakfast at a family-run restaurant set inside an old castle. We then drove to Piran on the coast to explore Slovenia’s small, yet remarkably beautiful, coastline before heading toward Ljubljana. There, we wrapped up our trip with a lovely dinner and an evening stroll through the charming Old Town.
Slovenia truly has it all: mighty mountains, thrilling caves, delicious meals, beautiful towns, and a captivating coastline. A real gem of a destination!
P.S. Our original plan was to complete a condensed version of the exact itinerary our tour groups will experience. However, due to the weather challenges, we had to adapt and adjust the entire schedule along the way. On the positive side, this allowed us to see just how much more this incredible country has to offer!
