Hiking the Balkans

through Kosovo, Albania and Montenegro

Hiking the Balkans

through Kosovo, Albania and Montenegro

From USD 2662

This impressive alpine trek, known as the "Peaks of the Balkans," offers a fantastic opportunity to explore the remote and untouched mountain regions of Kosovo, Albania, and Montenegro. Along the way, you’ll cross dramatic mountain peaks, hike through lush valleys, and visit idyllic villages that remain largely untouched by mass tourism.

Highlights

  • Gjeravica Summit (2,656 m) – Kosovo’s highest mountain
  • Three different countries in one week – including the point where they all meet
  • Some of the most remote regions in the Balkans
  • Via ferrata in the stunning Rugova Canyon
  • Views of Mount Karanfili (the three-headed mountain)

The journey begins in the welcoming town of Peja, nestled in the dramatic Accursed Mountains of western Kosovo. From here, we set out into a varied and untamed mountain landscape, crossing shepherds trails, and mountain paths that lead us through remote valleys and over alpine passes reaching up to 2,300 meters above sea level.

As we move through Kosovo, Albania, and Montenegro, we'll experience the unique atmosphere of each country. We meet locals along the way, sample traditional food, and get a glimpse into the rich cultural mix that defines this region.

Our route mainly follows the renowned Peaks of the Balkans trail, a cross-border trek once inaccessible due to the region’s political history. Today, these formerly restricted paths are open, offering hikers a rare opportunity to explore one of Europe's most striking and least-visited mountain areas.

*This adventure can also be booked as a self-guided tour.*

Day 1:Welcome to Kosovo

Airfare is not included in this tour, so participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from Kosovo. For a smooth start to the trip, we recommend arriving in Pristina either on a morning flight or the day before the tour begins. Once in Kosovo, the group will meet with the guide at our charming hotel in the mountain town of Peja. After checking in and lunch, we start off the adventure with an exciting afternoon of Via Ferrata in Rugova Canyon. You can choose between a slightly easier or a more challenging route—both led by certified Via Ferrata guides. If you prefer a gentler start to your journey, you’re welcome to spend the day exploring Peja’s historic neighborhoods at your own pace. In the evening, we all gather for a cozy welcome dinner to get to know each other and look ahead to the days to come.

Day 2:Hike from Kuqishte to Babino Polje

Today’s hike begins with an early breakfast before we set out on the trail. This is a relatively long day, as we cross the border between Kosovo and Montenegro. We walk through beautiful mountain terrain with many natural springs, glacial lakes, and mountain passes offering stunning views. After passing the lakes, we gradually ascend to Lugu i Shkodrёs – a truly scenic area. It is known as the “Shkodra Pass” because it lies along an ancient route that once connected this region to the city of Shkodra in Albania. After a lunch break, we continue toward the Montenegrin border and descend into the remote summer village of Babino Polje, where we will spend the night.

Today's hike begins with a short drive along a rough 4x4 mountain road to the Zastan Valley. From Zastan, we follow a steep path gradually ascending through the forest, with approximately 3 km to the first lake. The stunning glacial lakes of Jezerca are among the finest sights the Albanian Alps have to offer. The lakes are a perfect spot to rest, and if you're feeling brave, you might even take a refreshing swim. After spending some time at the lakes, we continue upwards to a new pass along a beautiful trail with dramatic views of the surrounding mountains. Day 6:From Cerem to Doberdol

The hike connecting the two remote summer villages of Cerem and Doberdol is a highlight of the Peaks of the Balkans route. It is the highest accommodation stop on the trip and undoubtedly one of the most isolated. After breakfast, we leave Çerem and the Kollata massif behind and slowly hike upwards through the forest for a couple of hours. Today's hike is relatively long, with a lot of elevation gain and loss. We walk a fair bit through the forest, but still enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. We briefly cross the border into Montenegro before returning to Albania and passing the ruins of an old military border post. We then take a picnic break in the village of Balqin, which is used by shepherds during the summer season. After a hearty lunch and coffee break, we continue along a mostly flat, scenic path through patches of beech forest. Finally, we arrive at the remote and idyllic Doberdol, where we check in at the guesthouse for the night.

Day 7:The highest peak in Kosovo

The final day of the trek takes us from Doberdol via Gjeravica Summit (2,656 meters) to Gropa Erenikut and then on to Pristina, the capital of Kosovo and the youngest capital in Europe. Depending on the conditions and the guide's recommendation, we may also choose to hike to the point where the borders of the three countries meet. Gjeravica is the highest peak in Kosovo and definitely worth the climb. On this day's hike, we pass two beautiful glacial lakes: Heart Lake and Big Lake of Gjeravica. Once the hike is complete, we are transported for a 2.5-hour drive to Pristina. Here, we check into the hotel and gather in the evening for a pleasant farewell dinner.

Comfort level

3/6 Comfort

Simple accommodations, such as cabins or guesthouses, often with multi-bed rooms. Sometimes with bunk beds and often with a shared bathroom.

Activities/trips with some risk. Certain incidents may occur, and they may be of such a nature that they may require professional help.

Training and Preparations

The week-long trek along the Peaks of the Balkans route is relatively demanding – with many long ascents and descents. We hike for six consecutive days, often at altitudes between 2,000 and 3,000 meters.

A typical hiking day is around 6–7 hours, and on several days we’ll climb more than 1,000 meters. Our luggage is transported between all accommodations, so we only carry a daypack while hiking.

To join this trip, you should be comfortable hiking in mountainous terrain and be in generally good physical shape. Longer hikes in nature, such as multi-day hut-to-hut treks or backpacking trips, are excellent preparation.

The mountain lodges we stay in are relatively basic. We cannot guarantee that the lodges can fully accommodate special dietary needs. Even though we inform the lodges in advance, it’s best to communicate any specific requirements directly to each place upon arrival.

We also recommend these books for some quality pre-trip reading.

-Western Balkans - Lonely Planet
-The Accursed Mountains - Robert Carver
-Broken April - Ismail Kadare
-High Albania - Edith Durham

Visas, Vaccinations and Health

Before embarking on our journey together, we kindly remind all tour participants to check their respective country's visa status and vaccination requirements. Ensuring your travel documents are in order is a crucial step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months after the date of return.

If you are over 67, you should have a thorough medical check-up before your trip. Make your doctor aware that this is a trip involving physical exertion and moving off the beaten track.

It is important that you fill in all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of before and during the trip. Relevant health information that may have an impact on the tour must also be communicated to the guide at the start of the tour. NOTE - If you are on regular medication, have known allergies or the like, you must always have your personal medication with you.

Additional Information

During the first and last nights of the trip, the group will stay in comfortable hotels in the cities of Peja and Pristina. Throughout the hike and while in the mountains, the group will stay in well-maintained mountain lodges and guesthouses. All accommodations will serve meals, and packed lunches will be provided each morning for the day’s hike.

However, we recommend bringing along some extra snacks and protein bars, especially if you’re used to eating more while being active outdoors. Since the mountain huts can be remote, purchasing additional snacks along the trail may be difficult.

It can be difficult to find gluten-free whole grain bread, lactose-free options, or to fully accommodate other dietary requirements in some places along the route.

Please include any allergies or dietary needs in your registration form, and we will do our best to accommodate them. However, we still recommend that anyone with specific dietary needs bring a few backup items such as a pack of biscuits, energy bars, or other snacks you know you can eat. These can be brought from home or purchased in Peja before the mountain hike begins.

Equipment list

This list is intended as a guideline, so that we have what we need regardless of the weather we get on the trip. Remember that you can also get used hiking equipment that works perfectly. Get in touch if you have any questions. TIP: We recommend that you have the most important hiking equipment in your hand luggage, for example hiking boots and gore-tex jacket/trousers.

We need to know about all medicines you are taking, in case something happens.

You should be able to bring 2-3 litres of water.

Passport, tickets, bank card, proof of vaccination andproof of insurance. Remember to have a copy of important documents on your phone and/or somewhere in your bag.

Packing Tips

On this trip, you’ll only need to carry what you need for the day in your daypack, as the rest of your luggage will be transported to each overnight accommodation.

Warm showers are available at all accommodations, so it's nice to have clean, casual clothes to change into at the end of the day. We also recommend bringing your own lightweight indoor shoes.

If you're used to eating more while being active, it's a good idea to bring extra snacks and protein bars. Mountain huts can be remote, and additional snacks may be hard to find along the trail, so we recommend either bringing them from home or purchasing them in Peja on the first day of the tour.

Testimonial

"This trip was absolutely fantastic, to an area that seemed relatively untouched by tourism. Fantastic nature, with different highlights and scenery every day! Well organized from A to Z. On this trip we got an honest insight into life in the mountains of the Balkans! We had short stops at small primitive mountain huts along the way - very cozy! Exciting with very different accommodations along the way. The start with via Ferrata was very good. The local guide added both culture and history to the trip! Highly recommended! "
