Hiking the Balkans

Hiking the Balkans

Through Kosovo, Albania and Montenegro

From USD 3067

This impressive alpine trek, known as the "Peaks of the Balkans," offers a fantastic opportunity to explore the remote and untouched mountain regions of Kosovo, Albania, and Montenegro. Along the way, you’ll cross dramatic mountain peaks, hike through lush valleys, and visit idyllic villages that remain largely untouched by mass tourism.

Highlights

  • Gjeravica Summit (2656 m) – Kosovo’s highest mountain
  • Three different countries in one week – including the point where they all meet
  • Some of the most remote regions in the Balkans
  • Via ferrata in the stunning Rugova Canyon
  • Views of Mount Karanfili (the three-headed mountain)

The journey begins in the welcoming town of Peja, nestled in the dramatic Accursed Mountains of western Kosovo. From here, we set out into a varied and untamed mountain landscape, crossing shepherds trails, and mountain paths that lead us through remote valleys and over alpine passes reaching up to 2300 m.

As we move through Kosovo, Albania, and Montenegro, we'll experience the unique atmosphere of each country. We meet locals along the way, sample traditional food, and get a glimpse into the rich cultural mix that defines this region.

Our route mainly follows the renowned Peaks of the Balkans trail, a cross-border trek once inaccessible due to the region’s political history. Today, these formerly restricted paths are open, offering hikers a rare opportunity to explore one of Europe's most striking and least-visited mountain areas.

*This adventure can also be booked as a self-guided trip.*

Day 1:Welcome to Kosovo

Upon arrival in the capital Pristina we meet our local guide and are driven to the mountain town Peja. After we have checked in at the hotel we head out on an exciting Via Ferrata in Rugova Canyon. Here we have planned a slightly easier route and a slightly more challenging route that you can choose between. Both options will be with a certified Via Ferrata guide. If you want a slightly more relaxed start to the trip you can spend the day exploring the historical neighborhoods on your own. We meet again in the evening for a nice welcome dinner.

Day 2:Hike from Kuqishte to Babino Polje

Today's hike starts with an early breakfast before the mountain trip begins. This is a relatively long trip that crosses the border between Kosovo and Montenegro. We walk through beautiful mountain areas with many water sources, glacial water, and mountain passes with fantastic views. After passing the lakes, we gradually ascend to Lugu i Shkodrёs; A very beautiful landscape. It is called the "Shkodra Pass" because it lies along an ancient trail that connected this area to the city of Shkodra in Albania. After refueling with some lunch, we continue towards the border to Montenegro and further down to a remote village in Montenegro, Babino Polje, where we will stay overnight.

Day 6:From Cerem to Doberdol

The trip connecting the two remote summer villages Cerem and Doberdol is a highlight of the Peaks of the Balkans route. It is the highest accommodation on the trip, and arguably one of the most isolated. After breakfast, we leave Çerem and the Kollata massif behind us and hike slowly upwards in the forest for a couple of hours. Today's trip is a relatively long trip with many meters of elevation up and down. We walk a good deal in the forest, but still with great views towards the surrounding mountains. We briefly cross the border into Montenegro before we are back in Albania again and encounter the ruins of the old military border post. Furthermore, we take a picnic break in the village of Balqin, which is used by shepherds in the summer season. After a hearty lunch and coffee break, we continue walking along a mostly flat, scenic trail through sections of beech forest. Finally we arrive at remote and idyllic Doberdol where we check in at the guesthouse for the night.

Day 7:The highest peak in Kosovo

The last day of the trip goes from Doberdol via Gjeravica Summit (2656 m) to Gropa Erenikut and then to Pristina. This is Kosovo's capital and Europe's youngest capital. Depending on the conditions and the guide's recommendation, we can also choose to hike up to the point where the three country borders meet. Gjeravica is the highest peak in Kosovo and is definitely worth hiking up. On today's trip we pass two beautiful glacial lakes, Heart Lake and Big Lake of Gjeravica. Once finished with the mountain trip, we are transported a total of 2,5 hours to Prishtina. Here we check in at a hotel and gather in the evening for a nice farewell dinner.

On our trips, it is important to understand that we often will be traveling far off the beaten track. We will, of course, do everything we can to assist if anything should happen, but a potential rescue operation can be demanding. It is therefore extremely important that all participants arrive well-prepared and ready to handle unforeseen situations.

Physical level

3/6 Physical

Some segments of the journey may prove challenging. It's essential to possess a solid level of fitness prior to departure. Persistence will be required in reaching the trip's goal.

Comfort level

3/6 Comfort

Simple accommodations, such as cabins or guesthouses, often with multi-bed rooms. Sometimes with bunk beds and often with a shared bathroom.

Risk level

3/6 Risk

Activities/trips with some risk. Certain incidents may occur, and they may be of such a nature that they may require professional help.

Training and Preparations

The week-long trek along the Peaks of the Balkans route is relatively demanding – with many long ascents and descents. We hike for six consecutive days, often at altitudes between 2000 and 3000 meters. A typical hiking day is around 6–7 hours, and on several days we’ll climb more than 1,000 meters.

Our luggage is transported between all accommodations, so we only carry a daypack while hiking.

To join this trip, you should be comfortable hiking in mountainous terrain and be in generally good physical shape. Longer hikes in nature, such as multi-day hut-to-hut treks or backpacking trips, are excellent preparation.

The mountain lodges we stay in are relatively basic. We cannot guarantee that the lodges can fully accommodate special dietary needs. Even though we inform the lodges in advance, it’s best to communicate any specific requirements directly to each place upon arrival.

We also recommend these books for some quality pre-trip reading.

-Western Balkans - Lonely Planet
-The Accursed Mountains - Robert Carver
-Broken April - Ismail Kadare
-High Albania - Edith Durham

Visas, Vaccinations and Health

Before embarking on our journey together, we kindly remind all trip participants to check their respective country's visa status and vaccination requirements. Ensuring your travel documents are in order is a crucial step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure.

Norwegian citizens do not need a visa to enter Kosovo, Albania, or Montenegro. Be sure to bring your passport and a copy of it. See also the current entry and visa regulations on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' country pages, or check for your country's current visa rules.

If you are over 67 years old, you should have a thorough medical check-up before your trip. Make your doctor aware that this is a trip involving physical exertion and moving off the beaten track.

It is important that you complete all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of prior to and during the trip. Relevant health information that may affect the trip should also be communicated to the guide at the start of the trip. *Note* - If you are on regular medication, have known allergies or anything similar, you must always bring your personal medication with you.

See the overview on FHI´s pages on travel health advice. For vaccination and guidance, please contact Sentrum Reisemedisin: Reisemedisin.no.

Additional Information

For trips where flights are not included, please check our website to confirm that the departure is guaranteed before booking your own plane tickets. For each trip, we require a minimum number of confirmed participants before the departure can be guaranteed.

During the first and last nights of the trip, the group will stay in comfortable hotels in the cities of Peja and Pristina. Throughout the hike and while in the mountains, the group will stay in well-maintained mountain lodges and guesthouses. All accommodations will serve meals, and packed lunches will be provided each morning for the day’s hike.

However, we recommend bringing along some extra snacks and protein bars, especially if you’re used to eating more while being active outdoors. Since the mountain huts can be remote, purchasing additional snacks along the trail may be difficult.

It is not always easy to get hold of gluten-free wholemeal bread, lactose-free alternatives or to accommodate other food preferences. If you have any allergies, please let us know in the registration form and we will try to accommodate you as best we can. However, we would still recommend that anyone with special dietary needs bring some alternatives in the form of, for example, a packet of crispbread, energy bars or similar that you know you can eat. These can be brought from home or purchased in Peja before the mountain hike begins.

If you're used to eating more while being active, it's a good idea to bring extra snacks and protein bars. Mountain huts can be remote, and additional snacks may be hard to find along the trail, so we recommend either bringing them from home or purchasing them in Peja on the first day of the hike.

Testimonial

The trekking trip in the Balkans was a great success in every way. Gorgeous scenery, good food, cozy mountain huts, and, not least, very lovely people in the group. Our local guide from Kosovo gave us an interesting insight into the history of the countries and places we visited. Every day was different, and there was always something new to see. This trip has every potential to become a classic. It gets 5 solid stars from me.

Testimonial

This trip was absolutely fantastic, to an area that seemed relatively untouched by tourism. Fantastic nature, with different highlights and scenery every day! Well organized from A to Z. On this trip we got an honest insight into life in the mountains of the Balkans! We had short stops at small primitive mountain huts along the way - very cozy! Exciting with very different accommodations along the way. The start with via Ferrata was very good. The local guide added both culture and history to the trip! Highly recommended!
