Hiking in Réunion

a volcanic island with a French touch

Hiking in Réunion

a volcanic island with a French touch

From USD 2961

With lush tamarind forests, steep crater edges, wild orchids, and one of the world's most active volcanoes, Réunion offers stunning scenery. Add the island's French atmosphere and the locals' love for cuisine, and you're in for an unforgettable adventure for both body and soul.

Highlights

  • Sunrise from the island’s highest peak (3,071 m)
  • Lush tamarind forests filled with orchids
  • Contrasting, dramatic, and incredibly beautiful landscapes
  • Visiting the edge of one of the world's most active volcanoes – “Piton de la Fournaise”
  • Snorkeling on a reef with an impressive variety of colorful fish

Réunion is a rare and beautiful romantic adventure off the beaten path. As we wind 1200 meters up from the sea and swing into the bustling square of Cilaos, you’ll wonder where you are—out in the Indian Ocean, or in a French mountain village? The answer is “yes, both.” We embark on an eight-day hike from Cilaos, through a varied, dramatic, and grand landscape. Everyone we meet along the way greets us with: "Bonjour!"

The highest point on the island is the Piton des Neiges volcano (3,071 m), which has been inactive for 20,000 years. This volcano has shaped three "crater valleys" that we will visit on this hike. We start in the "Cirque de Cilaos" and continue through Mafate to Salazie. From there, we ascend the crater rim, aiming to reach the volcano's highest point at sunrise. We then head to the island’s second volcano, Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active volcanoes in the world with an average eruption once a year.

We end the trip with a couple of peaceful days in idyllic surroundings on the white sandy beaches on the island’s west side. Here, you’ll find coral reefs teeming with a multitude of colorful fish species. Snorkeling here is like swimming in an aquarium, an experience you shouldn’t miss. We can also enjoy French food and wine, including cheeses from the mainland, while watching the sun set into the Indian Ocean.

*This adventure can also be booked as a self-guided tour.*

Day 1:Welcome to Réunion

Airfare is not included in this tour, so you are responsible for arranging your own transportation to and from Réunion. The first day is unscheduled, allowing you to arrive at our starting point in Cilaos at your convenience. Upon arrival in Réunion, the group will meet together with our guide at a charming hotel in the mountain village of Cilaos. It’s the kind of place that makes you pause and wonder—have we landed in a quaint French alpine town or in the heart of the Indian Ocean? The answer is: both. Nestled like a stage within a natural amphitheater, Cilaos is encircled by lush, steep crater walls and lies within one of three massive calderas surrounding the island’s highest peak, Piton des Neiges (3,071 m). This picturesque village marks the starting point of our multi-day hiking adventure. Once we've settled into the hotel, we’ll have time to either explore our surroundings or simply rest and recharge before dinner.

Day 2:First day on the trail

Today, we’re ready for an exciting hike that takes us through crater valleys before we climb two volcanoes, including the island’s highest peak, Piton des Neiges. We begin in the crater valley of Cilaos, and after a short bus ride from the village, we start a gradual trek up to the first crater rim. The trail climbs steeply toward Col du Taibit (2,082 m), and if we're lucky, we’ll be rewarded with stunning views. On the other side, we descend into Mafate, the most isolated of the three crater valleys. We’ll have lunch in Marla before continuing to the roadless village of La Nouvelle. It’s a tough start to the journey with plenty of elevation gain and descent, but all the more rewarding when we arrive. We’ll be staying here for two nights. Dinner is served before we tuck in for the night.

Day 3:Exploring the La Nouvelle region

After the hike to the viewpoint, we take a day trip down to the river, to a place called Les Trois Roches, named after three large rocks by the water. The river drops sharply into a dramatic gorge with a beautiful waterfall, which we can see from a viewpoint farther away. We’ll enjoy a packed lunch and can take a dip in the pleasantly temperate river. We return the same way and have dinner at the campsite where we’re staying. If the skies are clear, it’s worth taking a look at the starry sky on the way back to the cabin.

Day 4:Through enchanted landscapes to a new crater valley – Salazie

After an early breakfast, we stop at the bakery to grab some lunch before heading to the next crater. On our way up to the Col de Fourche crater rim (1942 m), we walk through a magical forest, where ancient tamarind trees create an enchanting atmosphere. The descent from Col de Fourche to Hell-Bourg (930 m) is long and steep, making it quite a workout for our legs. The hike finishes with a steep climb up to Hell-Bourg's main street, lined with beautiful houses and blooming gardens, where our accommodation awaits nearby.

Day 5:Free day in Hell-Bourg

Our hike in Réunion includes some long stretches, so a rest day halfway through is a welcome break for most of us. Hell-Bourg, one of the island’s most charming towns, is a lush paradise, reminiscent of the Garden of Eden. Take the time to explore one of the old colonial-style mansions with their beautiful Creole gardens, then relax by the fountain at the local bakery.

Day 8:Summit hike to Piton des Neiges (3,071 m) and onwards to the southeast

It will be a short night for those heading to the summit of Piton des Neiges. We start around 2 a.m., walking with headlamps for the first part of the journey. After a couple of hours of steady night hiking, the horizon begins to brighten, and it's a powerful reward to witness the sunrise from the island's highest point, Piton des Neiges. Once the sun is up, the temperature rises, and the return to the mountain cabin can be done in shorts. After breakfast, we continue to Plaine des Cafres, where a short drive takes us to the cabin in the Piton de la Fournaise massif. Overall, it will be a long day, and it's perfectly fine to feel both tired and satisfied after such an amazing hike.

Day 9:Hiking an active volcano - "Piton de la Fournaise" (2,632 m)

After an early breakfast, we set out on an exciting yet easy hike through a unique landscape. Is this what the moon looks like? While the weather is usually best in the morning, we must be prepared for changing conditions with misty clouds and cooler temperatures. Piton de la Fournaise is one of the world’s most active volcanoes, though we’ll be "lucky" if we witness an eruption during our visit. At best, we might catch a faint smell or see a little smoke rising. Still, it’s a special experience in a landscape like no other! We’ll have lunch along the way before heading back to the cabin. There, we’ll pack up, say goodbye to the mountains, and get ready for beach life by the coast. It’s a couple of hours' drive to the sea, specifically to Les Salines-les-Bains. Here, we’ll find a 5-kilometer stretch of white sandy beach where we can enjoy lazy days of sunbathing and water activities.

Training and Preparations

The trip is relatively challenging, with several day hikes of up to 20 km involving a lot of ascents and descents along the way. On the longest days, we walk for 8-9 hours, but we also have some rest days along the way. When we leave Cilaos, we carry backpacks and gear for five nights, and on the trek to Piton de la Fournaise, we only carry daypacks.

Being in good shape is definitely a big advantage for this trip. We suggest adding a few extra training sessions to prepare, especially for the high passes. Long day hikes in nature or multi-day backpacking trips are also great ways to get ready.

It’s also a good idea to read up on Réunion and the hike before you go. There’s plenty of interesting books on the island, along with helpful travel guides.

Visas, Vaccinations and Health

Before embarking on our journey together, we kindly remind all tour participants to check their respective country's visa status and vaccination requirements. Ensuring your travel documents are in order is a crucial step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months after the date of return.

If you are over 67, you should have a thorough medical check-up before the trip. Make the doctor aware that it is a trip with physical exertion and where we move off the beaten track.

It is important that you fill in all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of before and during the trip. Relevant health information that may have an impact on the tour must also be communicated to the guide at the start of the tour. Note - If you are on regular medication, have known allergies or the like, you must always have your personal medication with you.

Additional Information

Accommodation will be in double or shared rooms at guesthouses and simple mountain cabins in the interior, with or without a shower. We should be prepared to share rooms, including with other guests. At the end of the trip, we will stay at a hotel by the coast. If you enjoy water activities, it is highly recommended to bring snorkeling gear.

It can be difficult to find gluten-free wholemeal bread, lactose-free alternatives, or other special dietary options everywhere. Please note any allergies on the registration form, and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. However, we recommend that those with specific dietary requirements bring their own alternatives, such as crackers, energy bars, or other foods you know you can eat.

Packing tips

In the lowlands, the weather is warm and pleasant, around 25°C during the day. In the mountains, it's cooler, with temperatures ranging from 10 to 17°C, and at higher altitudes, nighttime temperatures can drop to around zero. Rain is possible.

We’ll need a sleeping bag liner for the night at the mountain cabin located at the foot of Piton des Neiges. Blankets and throws are provided to keep warm.

When we leave Cilaos, we’ll be carrying a backpack with gear for three days. We’ll be reunited with our main bag in Hell-Bourg, where we’ll have a chance to repack before setting off on the next leg of the journey. Since the route involves a lot of ascent and descent, it’s a good idea to pack smart to avoid a heavy backpack.

For the hike to Piton de la Fournaise, we’ll just need a daypack.

"It was a fantastic trip with a great combination of mountain trekking, culture, and tropical island vibes. For me, this journey was a perfect example of what I love about Hvitserk trips: the mix of real hiking adventures and cultural experiences in lesser-known corners of the world."
