Manaslu Circuit

Trekking Nepal's hidden gem

Manaslu Circuit

Trekking Nepal's hidden gem

From USD 3760

The tour around Manaslu is definitely one of the most beautiful mountain tours in Nepal, and one of the country's best-kept secrets. Manaslu lies east of the popular Annapurna range, but stands out by being less developed and correspondingly more desolate. On this tour you will experience a wild and untouched Himalaya.

Highlights

  • Colorful and lively Kathmandu
  • A majestic view of the Himalayas, with the world's 8th highest peak, Mount Manaslu at 8,136m front and center
  • Larkya La pass at approx. 5200m
  • Beautiful mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, suspension bridges and cozy villages
  • A nice mix of Hindu and Buddhist culture

We start and end the tour in fabled Kathmandu. From Kathmandu we travel with good 4-wheel drive vehicles to Arughat Bazaar and on to Soti Khola, which is the starting point for the trek itself and where the first night will be. From there we move up along the Bhuri Gandaki river through narrow valleys and over long suspension bridges. Along the way, we pass small cozy villages where time feels as if it has stood still for the last hundred years. All around us it is green and lush and far up on the hillsides are small houses with their rice terraces and with prayer flags waving in the wind. On the way up towards Samagaon and Samdo, we see a clear influence from the Tibetan culture.

The hike gives you a variety of great nature experiences, from tropical rainforest up to high alpine areas with glaciers and some of the world's highest mountains on all sides. We visit several different ethnic population groups and move right up to the Tibetan border area. The hike's highest point, the Larkya La pass at around 5,200 meters high offers fantastic views of mountains such as Himal Chuli, Manaslu, Himlung Himal and peaks in the Annapurna massif.

The green-clad hillsides have now given way to a somewhat more barren landscape and pointed Himalayan peaks. We are as close to Manaslu as we can get, and the thin air now makes it a little harder to walk. Perhaps there are also some patches of snow here and there, in some periods it can actually be almost full winter up here. Samagaon is the largest village in this region and the afternoon can be spent strolling around the narrow streets.

Today marks a challenging and lengthy journey. We start the day early with a hearty breakfast before embarking on our trek at dawn, around 4:00 - 5:00. With headlamps aglow and layered in our warmest attire, we begin our ascent towards the renowned Larkya La pass, famed for its breathtaking vistas of the Himalayas, it is often described as one of the most dramatic mountain passes in the Himalayas. While not the loftiest pass in Nepal, it presents unique obstacles, a demanding 8-10 hours of trekking, including 4-5 hours at high altitudes through rugged and exposed terrain. Following the arduous climb, a steep descent of 1,600 meters awaits, leading us to the Annapurna side, traversing moraine fields before reaching the vast, flat expanse where Bhimtang awaits.

Some segments of the journey may prove challenging. It's essential to possess a solid level of fitness prior to departure. Persistence will be required in reaching the trip's goal.

Traning and Preparations

Most of our tours contain physical challenges. You should be used to walking and in normal good physical shape to participate. You do not need to have any experience of trips at altitude, but we recommend that you put in a good amount of training before the trip.

The altitude exerts a noticeable impact on the body, making everything feel heavier compared to mountain trips at lower elevations. Therefore on this trip, maintaining a healthy level of physical fitness is crucial for a positive experience.

We cross several suspension bridges along the way, and some of them go over airy gorges. This is good to be prepared for if you have a fear of heights.

We suggest this travel literature for informative pre-trip reading material.

  • Trekking in Nepal - A traveler`s guide

Visas, Vaccinations and Health

Before embarking on our journey together, we kindly remind all tour participants to check their respective country's visa status and vaccination requirements. Ensuring your travel documents are in order is a crucial step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure.

Participants can order visas online before departure, it currently costs 50 USD and is paid in cash on arrival in Kathmandu. We send out information about visas with a link to the application a few weeks before departure. There is no point in applying for a visa to Nepal before this, as the application is only valid for 15 days.

You need 2 passport photos for the trekking permit, and you must bring the passport photos from home.

If you are over 67, you should have a thorough medical check-up before the trip. Make the doctor aware that it is a trip with physical exertion and where we move off the beaten track. It is important that you fill in all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of before and during the trip. Relevant health information that may have an impact on the tour must also be communicated to the guide at the start of the tour. NB - If you are on regular medication, have known allergies or the like, you must always have your personal medication with you.

Additional Information

It is important to check whether the departure is guaranteed or not before you book your flight tickets for the journey. On each departure, we must have a minimum number of confirmed participants before we can guarantee the departure.

We stay in good hotels in Kathmandu. On the trek we stay in simple teahouses/lodges. The standard declines in the highest lodges. We strive to place as many as possible in double rooms in the mountains, but at some of the teahouses you will be placed in 3- and 4-person rooms because they have nothing else to offer, this applies especially in Samdo and Dharamsala.

Climatic conditions are decisive for when you want to visit Nepal. The end of September to November, the start of the dry season, and February-April, the end of the dry season, are the best periods to go. The rest of the year is generally too hot and dusty for comfort, and the monsoon from late May to mid-September blankets the mountains with clouds and turns the dry roads into mud pits.

It is not always easy to get hold of gluten-free wholemeal bread, lactose-free alternatives or to accommodate other dietary requirements. In Nepal, you can mostly only get light bread. Enter it in the registration form if you have allergies and we will try to accommodate as best we can. We would still recommend that those who have special dietary needs bring some alternatives in the form of, for example, a packet of crackers, energy bars or similar that you know you can eat.

Drinks and snacks in the mountains are not included in the price. We recommend that you withdraw between 45 - 50,000 rupees for this purpose. Consumption is individual and depends on how much soft drink and snacks you want to buy in addition to water. In addition, you will need $40 - $50 for entrance fees for sightseeing in Kathmandu, and tips for hotels/drivers/restaurants in Kathmandu.

Packing Tips

Spring and autumn are usually clear, low rainfall and dry in Gorkha district. At the start of the trip, it is mostly a pleasant temperature and shorts weather, but the higher we climb, the colder it gets. It is often cold in the evenings inside the teahouses, and therefore we recommend a good and warm sleeping bag. You freeze faster at altitude, and poor sleep leads to poor acclimatization. That's why it's important to do what you can to be comfortable at night.

Swimwear can be nice if there is a pool at the hotel we are staying at, this changes somewhat from trip to trip, but good to bring to Kathmandu.

We sleep on mattresses in beds at the teahouses, but these are of varying quality, and many therefore prefer to lie on their own sleeping pad in addition for extra comfort.

You should have good mountain shoes on this trip. Possibly light hiking boots with ankle support if you prefer.

On this trip we climb a lot of stairs, walking poles are therefore highly recommended to relieve the knees.

Pack sensibly and consider that your luggage is carried up the mountain by the local team.
