This tour beautifully blends the natural beauty and cultural richness that make South Africa a must-visit destination.

Highlights

  • Hiking in the magnificent Drakensberg mountains
  • Tugela Falls, the worlds tallest multiple drop waterfall
  • Madonna and Her Worshippers
  • Safari - with the possibility of seeing 'The Big Five'
  • Vibrant Johannesburg

Join us for an unforgettable journey through the diverse landscapes of South Africa, where breathtaking mountains, thrilling safaris, and vibrant culture await. Our adventure begins in the majestic Drakensberg mountains, where we set out on the Drakensberg Mini Traverse, also known as the Northern Traverse, often ranked one of the top 10 hikes in the world. We spend 5 days of uniterrupted hiking along the lush and beautiful mountains, camping in tents along the way. We will have support to carry all of our camping equipment and food along the hike so that the rucksacks we carry will only be filled with what we need for a day in the mountains. We get a chance to rest our weary legs after the hike with a stunning two day stay at a beautiful safari lodge in the Nambiti game reserve. Here we will enjoy early morning and evening safaris with a chance of catching a glimpse of The Big Five (elephant, lion, rhinoceros, African buffalo, leopard).

Day 7:Last morning in the tent

This is our final day on the trail and is full of exciting oppurtunities. At this point most of the group will have developed a good pair of trail legs and ready for the grande finale of the Northern traverse. Depending on the groups fitness and if time allows, we will summit North and South Peak which make up the Mnweni saddle. The Bell Traverse is arguably one of the highlights of the trek, with surprises around every corner as the path takes you along the Mitre, the Chessmen, the Inner and outer Horns, around the Bell and then, the challenging Bugger’s Gully. After spending about 4 hours on this traverse we will come out near the base of Cathedral Peak with the option of summiting this peak. The final part of the Northern Traverse is a relatively easy 8 km, taking the group down Orange Peal Gap and onwards to Cathedral Peak Hotel, where a well earned dinner, cold beers and hot shower await!

Some segments of the journey may prove challenging. It's essential to possess a solid level of fitness prior to departure. Persistence will be required in reaching the trip's goal.

Comfort level

3/6 Comfort

Simple accommodations, such as cabins or guesthouses, often with multi-bed rooms. Sometimes with bunk beds and often with a shared bathroom.

Risk level

3/6 Risk

Activities/trips with some risk. Certain incidents may occur, and they may be of such a nature that they may require professional help.

Training and Preparations

For five days we will be camping in the mountains, carrying what we need in our rucksacks. We get help from our local porters to carry our camping equipment, communal equipment and food. We walk in some steep terrain, up to an altitude of 3,000 metres. We walk between 4 and 6 hours in hilly terrain.

You must be comfortable with carrying a backpack weighing approximately 8 kg for extended periods of time. The route includes exposed sections and is rugged in most parts.

You should be used to walking and in normal good physical shape to participate. Longer hikes in the mountains, "day hikes" or multiday backpacking trips in the mountains are good ways to prepare.

Visas, Vaccinations and Health

Before embarking on our journey together, we kindly remind all tour participants to check their respective country's visa status and vaccination requirements. Ensuring your travel documents are in order is a crucial step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months after the date of return.

If you are over 67, you should have a thorough medical check-up before your trip. Make your doctor aware that this is a trip involving physical exertion and moving off the beaten track.

It is important that you fill in all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of before and during the trip. Relevant health information that may have an impact on the tour must also be communicated to the guide at the start of the tour. NOTE - If you are on regular medication, have known allergies or the like, you must always have your personal medication with you.

Additional Information

It is important to check whether the departure is guaranteed or not before booking your international flights for the trip. On each departure, we must have a minimum number of confirmed participants before we can guarantee the departure.

The tour begins in Johannesburg and finishes in Durban, flights should be purchased accordingly.

For the majority of the trip we sleep in shared twin rooms at nice safari lodges, mountain lodges and hotels. During the mountain trek we sleep in two-person tents. Single rooms can be booked on request, at an additional cost.

It is not always easy to get hold of gluten-free wholemeal bread, lactose-free alternatives or to accommodate other dietary requirements.  On this trip there is a lot of light bread for breakfast and lunch. Enter in the registration form if you have allergies and we will try to accommodate as best we can. We would still recommend that those who have special food needs (and those who need extra nutrition for their packed lunch) bring some alternatives in the form of, for example, a pack of crackers, energy bars or similar that you know you can eat.

Equipment list

This list is intended as a guideline, so that we have what we need regardless of the weather we get on the trip. Remember that you can also get used hiking equipment that works perfectly. Packing Tips

In the summer months from October to April, there is a subtropical climate with dry days and perhaps a shower in the afternoon.

On the mountain tour, you only need to bring what you need for these 5 days. You don't have to worry about bringing a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat or backpacks. These are provided for the mountain tour. A porter will be assigned to each walker, who will carry excess equipment and luggage in addition to approx. 8 kg each hiker carries themselves.

What you don't need for the mountain tour can be transported in luggage transport, so you get it back after the mountain tour.
