Day by day

Northern Lights over Tromsø _Yngve Olsen Sæbbe - www.nordnorge.com

Day 1:Step aboard Varg SY

We meet in Tromsø at 10 AM and are greeted by our skipper and crew. When we are settled onboard, we head straight out for the adventure. We are sailing for quite some distance already today, to get further north. So we will all have good chances of standing behind the wheel, hoisting sails and taking in the views. Lunch is served as we sail approach the Lyngen Alps, some of the most alpine peaks we find in Northern Norway! It's already dark again as we find a suitable anchorage for the night. If someone wants to stretch their legs after a full sailing day, we got snowshoes onboard, and will bring headlamps onboard for a little hike in the dark. For the evening the sauna and hot-tub will be fired up and we enjoy a delicious dinner onboard at our peaceful anchorage!

Day 2:Scouting

We are now in the big fjord of Kvænangen, where huge schools of herring come in every winter to feed. With these huge amount of fish follows lots of fishing boats, and also large numbers of Orcas, Humpbacks and other whales. We join the party and with our quiet sailboat, with just a small number of people onboard, we have a good chance of getting close to the whales without disturbing. We are seeing the whales in their element, and visiting their feeding grounds for the winter. So we will enjoy and observe the spectacle without harming and disturbing these majestic animals! There will probably be lots of chances to get your cameras out and catch some good whale pictures! For the evening we aim for a bonfire on the beach, accompanied by dinner, folk tales and hopefully some dancing auroras in the sky!

Day 3:Exploring the area

We wake up to another impressive skyline of towering peaks and enjoy our breakfast with local specialities onboard. From yesterday we have gotten a taste of the show the herring and whales make, and today we are again on the lookout for some marine mammal action! Maybe we’ll launch the dinghy and get even closer to the surface as we glide in between whale blows and tail fins. As we get towards lunch hours, we will head west again, as the colours in the sky change from orange and red to pink, purple and blue. Out here we are also sailing around in the middle of the freshest fishmarket you can find. We will try our luck and see if we can provide the chef with some fresh ingredients for dinner!

Day 4:Our last day

Our last day on the adventure, and we have one more thrill before we head back towards Tromsø. After a healthy breakfast onboard, and our morning swims(!), we will take our dinghy onshore and meet our friends in Lyngen Husky Safari. Where we are taken on a little dog mushing adventure. We are dressed up accordingly and will get to know the dogs and rotate on driving the sleds ourselves. It's a really special feeling to fly through the alpine arctic winter landscape, where the sea meets the mountains. Only with the quiet sounds of the dog's feet in the snow to be heard! After some joyfull hours in the sunrise light, we get back onboard for our final sail. We have lunch underway, and pack our bags for now. Before we say goodbye in Tromsø harbour at 5 PM.
