Jordan Trail to Petra

A journey through desert magic, world heritage and human encounters

12.10.2025

Participant Ulrike extended her third visit to the Middle East with a trip on the Jordan Trail organized by us in the fall of 2025. Read why she is convinced that Jordan is the most fascinating destination you can imagine.

Traveling to the Middle East when the world is in turmoil can feel both frightening and perhaps even irresponsible. But sometimes it is precisely those trips that challenge us a little that also give us the most in return. For me, the Jordan Trail was such a trip – a reminder of human warmth, the grandeur of nature and how important it is to support local communities when times are toughest.

Jordan is a safe and stable country in a troubled region. Coming here now is not just a vacation; it is a way to show solidarity. You support families, small businesses, and local communities that depend on tourism and welcome you with open arms.

The hike from Dana to Petra

Norrøna Adventures' hike in Jordan follows one of the most beautiful stages of the Jordan Trail – a 650-kilometer route that winds its way through the entire country. We walked a five-day stage from Dana to Petra, and every day was like stepping into a new landscape.

We slept in tents under the stars, and our own crew took care of absolutely everything our bodies and souls needed along the way. All we had to do was put one foot in front of the other and take in the surroundings: mountain formations in all the colors of the rainbow, spectacular gorges, desert light that changes every minute, and the most beautiful sunsets you could ever dream of.

And then there's Petra... words cannot describe it. Buildings carved straight out of the mountain over 2000 years ago, in a valley that still feels sacred.

The Dead Sea, Wadi Rum, and Jebel Um Ad Dami

Before we started our hike, we began our feast (you'll remember the food here!) in Madaba, the “City of Mosaics”. From there, we stopped by the Dead Sea—the lowest point on earth. There is something almost comical about just lying back and floating without sinking. A strange, weightless pause before the adventure began.

After Petra, the trip continued to the iconic Wadi Rum. From here, we climbed Jordan's highest mountain, Jebel Um Ad Dami (approx. 1,800 meters above sea level), to conclude our hike through this beautiful country. Here we could see all the way into Saudi Arabia. The desert in Wadi Rum is like a universe of its own – quiet, endless and magnificent.

Finally, Aqaba, the country's only coastal city, awaited us. After days of sand, dust and mountains, it was pure luxury to dive into crystal clear water and let the body rest.
