Sigurd Toven Gautun
Sigurd is from eastern Norway but has made his home in Longyearbyen, where he combines his passion for Arctic outdoor life with his role as a guide. He studied Arctic Nature Guiding in Svalbard and leads, among other things, our ski tours here.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in Arctic Outdoor Life and Nature Guiding from UiT, as well as a Practical Pedagogical Education. Sigurd is also a certified kayak instructor through NPF. In his free time, he has completed private expeditions such as crossing Norway lengthwise, a ski expedition in Finnmark, and sailing trips. In the spring of 2024, he started as a guide for Norrøna, bringing experience, confidence, and knowledge to all the trips he leads.

I’m from Bærum, in eastern Norway.
Where do you call home at the moment?
I live in Longyearbyen, Svalbard.

Skiing, hunting, and relaxing by the campfire.

What do you always bring in your backpack?
I always bring my camera on trips!
What do you do in your daily life to reduce your CO2 footprint?
I fix all my gear and buy used if possible.
What is your favorite place in the world?
I really like Fridtjovhamna in Svalbard.
What kind of advice would you give a 10 year old version of yourself?
In Norway, there’s a saying: ‘Wool is gold!’ That’s what I would tell my 10-year-old self.
What is your hobbies/what do you like spending the time on outside work and the outdoor activities?
I enjoy doing handicrafts, among other things.
If you could choose a super power, what would it be and why?
I would choose to control my own evaporation, to avoid sweaty clothes and frozen ski boots. Or radar vision, so I could find my way and spot unexpected snow cornices in whiteout conditions.
