Unique Sunnmøre

Exceptional ski area

From USD 1492

Sunnmøre is one of Norway's most beautiful areas for ski touring. We will hunt for the best snow, the nicest summits, and the best descents. We will use a taxi boat and ferry to reach untouched mountains and will be based in beautiful Sæbø of Sunnmøre.

Highlights

  • Accommodation right by the fjord at Sagafjord Hotel in Sæbø
  • Skiing in some of Norway's most beautiful mountains
  • Highly skilled and locally known guides

This is the dream trip for those who love skiing and mountain tours. Based out of Sæbø with a local guide, everything is in order for us to pick the most beautiful peaks and the best descents that are a short distance from the hotel. Which peaks we choose depends entirely on the weather and driving conditions, but we have mountains such as Slogen, Skårasalen, Blåbretindene, Blæja, Kvitegga, Randers top, or Kolåstinden - to name a few favorites. We often use a taxi boat or ferry to cross the Hjørundfjord to get to the starting point for the summit tour. That alone is an experience in itself!

After a long day of skiing, we return to Sagafjord Hotel. Right by the sea, perhaps a swim in the fjord is tempting after your turn? Possibly a beer? The experience is topped off with a good dinner before we end the evening by planning the next day in front of the fireplace.

Day 2:Ski touring in Sunnmøre

After a hearty breakfast, it is departure time for today's ski trip. We´ll look at today's weather and driving conditions. From the hotel it is a short distance to Slogen, the mountain that is often referred to as the "Queen of the Sunnmøre alps". Alternatively, we can take a ferry across the Hjørundfjord and go to Randers Topp, or choose another spectacular tour option such as going to the Skårasalen with a descent straight down into the Hjørundfjord and to the roadless village of Skår. From there we take the ferry back to the cars. Back at the hotel, there will be opportunities to have a cold beer in the yard, or enjoy the view from the pier. In the evening, a two-course dinner is served before we end the evening with trip planning in front of the fireplace.

Day 3:Touring with endless choices

Same arrangement as yesterday, but on different peaks. We look at the conditions and travel where the best option is. Perhaps Kvitegga is also an alternative? The peak is not far away and is the highest in Ørsta. We can also take a ferry across the Hjørundfjord and drive up to Standalhytta. From here it is a fantastic trip up to the classics Kolåstinden or Nordre Sætretinden. A slightly shorter alternative is Sylvkallen - from the top it is steep down into the Hjørundfjord, but on the "backside" there are good skiing conditions. If we wish, it is also possible to take a "transition trip" over Blåbretinden - and end up at the pier in Trandal and then take the ferry back. Trandal is a roadless village by the Hjørundfjord - and the village has its own pub, where you can try to find time for a beer before we take the ferry back. A lovely two-course dinner awaits at Sagafjord Hotel.

Day 4:Last day out

After breakfast, we´ll check out of the hotel and get ready for new skiing opportunities. If your legs are tired after two touring days, Blæja can be an alternative this day, if we havent dont it yet. This is an easy trip - but one that offers a spectacular view over Sunnmøre and the Hjørundfjord. If the whole group wishes, there is also an option for guided off-piste skiing in the Alpine resort in Stranda (lift ticket not included). It may also be appropriate to include a peak trip on the road towards Stryn or towards Ålesund/Ørsta if this is appropriate for the tour group's return journey. After the tour and back at the hotel - and perhaps a cake or soft drink in the house- we´ll return home.

Training and Preperation

In order to participate on this trip, you must have good physical fitness ascending and descending on skis. Ascents can vary depending on the group's ability and snow conditions, but being able to ascend 1,200 - 2,000 meters per day is important when wanting to participate on this trip.

It's important to have experience in ski touring and to be an able skier in mountain terrain outside groomed ski slopes. Avalanche awareness and training are important, as well as the knowledge of how to use avalanche safety equipment, such as a beacon, shovel, and probe. Your guide will have the final risk management decision-making on this trip in order to ensure safe ascents and descents each day. Changes in weather, snow, or road conditions can change the itinerary that is presented in the day-to-day program.

Accommodation

We will spend the night in a double room at the Sagafjord hotel, beautifully located right by the Hjørundfjord. It is also possible to stay in a single room for an additional supplement of NOK 2,500.

Transport

The easiest way to get to Sæbø is by private car, possibly a rental car from the airport in Volda or Ålesund. We need private cars to drive to the starting point for the summit tours. If we return somewhere other than where the cars are parked, we take a taxi back to the starting point, and split the bill or shuttle cars.

Testimonial

"Sunnmore ski touring was fantastic. The touring was beautiful, the views stunning and the guide very knowledgable. Sagafjord hotel is stunning, the food was delicious and we even spent an afternoon in the floating sauna and jumped into the cold water a few times when the weather was too challenging for a long tour."
