Sognefjorden - Ski touring weekend for beginners

Fjord Views & Sauna at Nes Gard

From USD 1816

There’s a good reason why the mountains surrounding Sognefjorden are a magnet for ski touring enthusiasts. The region offers a rare combination of consistent snow conditions and a vast variety of terrain to explore. When you top it all off with a stay at the beautiful Nes Gard, you have everything you need for a perfect weekend in the mountains.

Highlights

  • Explore one of Norway’s finest and most diverse skiing regions.
  • Stay at the historic and idyllic Nes Gard.
  • Relax with fjord-side after-ski and a sauna after a day on the peaks.
  • Enjoy locally sourced cuisine and regional specialties.

Nestled deep along the Lustrafjord, an arm of the famous Sognefjord, you’ll find Nes Gard. Stepping through the doors of this recently renovated 1850s farmstead feels like stepping back in time, yet with modern comforts, while keeping the authentic feel of the old farm. The location is perfect as a basecamp. You are close to the best trips in Sogn, including Jostedalen and the Jotunheimen mountains.

After a day in the mountains, you’ll experience Norwegian hospitality perfected over centuries. The "après-ski" here starts on the pier with a heated wood-fired hot tub, and the evenings often wind down in the cozy atmosphere of the converted barn’s wine cellar.

Physical level

2/6 Physical

We need to exert some effort to reach our destination. With a good level of fitness and determination, these journeys are manageable for the majority of participants. Being active in daily life is a beneficial preparation.

Comfort level

4/6 Comfort

Simple to good quality inns, such as small family hotels, B&Bs and agrotourism (farmhouses), usually with private bathrooms.

Risk level

2/6 Risk

Activities/trips with little risk. There are usually few incidents and they are usually of such a nature that they can be dealt with locally.

Training and preparation

This trip is perfect for those who are new to ski touring, as well as those with some experience who prefer a real mountain adventure over a standard technical course. To get the most out of the weekend, you should be in good physical shape and have some experience with alpine, touring, or telemark skiing.

This weekend offers an introduction to ski touring and is designed for beginners, without going quite as in-depth into the topics as we do on our dedicated courses. If you are looking for a comprehensive ski touring course, we recommend our Ski Touring Course at Vatnahalsen.

Avalanche safety equipment is mandatory for every participant. An introductory course on the use of avalanche transceivers will be included in the tour program.

Accommodation

We spend the night in a double room at Nes Gård, which is located at the entrance to three national parks: Jostedalen, Breheimen and Sognefjellet. All rooms have private bathrooms, different interiors and the outdoor area is a beautiful place to relax after a day of touring. It is also possible to stay in a private room for a single room supplement of NOK 3,500.

Transport

The easiest way to get to Nes Gard is by private car, possibly a rental car from the airport in Sogndal. We need private cars to drive to the starting point for each day's summit tours. If we return somewhere other than where the cars are parked, we take a taxi back to the starting point, or shuttle cars and split the bill.

Day 2:Mountains

After a hearty breakfast, we take off for today's ski trip. We look at the weather and driving conditions and choose based on that, with the guides advice. Once at home on the farm, there will be an après-ski, a hot tub and a three-course dinner. Perhaps we will have time to visit the new wine bar at Nes Gard. We enjoy ourselves with like-minded people in the pleasant atmosphere on the farm before retiring for the evening.

Day 3:Ski touring

We are eagerly following the weather forecast and preparing for the same plan as yesterday. We look at the conditions, make decisions together with guides and travel to the best area. It is intended that participants can contribute and ask about trail selection, avalanche danger and other aspects that will make you better equipped for later trips.
