Highlights and Hidden Gems in the Northwest

Experience the best of this unique region

From USD 3862

Okay, listen to this. In the course of one week, we will hike over Hoemskaret Mountain Pass, cycle the entire Aursjøvegen Mountain Road (spread over two days), climb Innerdalstårnet, and go to the top Sunndalen's own Pulpit Rock, called Ekkertinden. And not only that, we will spend the nights in cozy accommodations such as Hoemsbu, Renndølsetra, and Budsjord Pilgrim Farm. An unforgettable trip to the Northwest awaits!

Highlights

  • Wine tasting at Tuen Wine Farm, on the first day of the trip
  • Hike over Hoemskaret Mountain Pass, to Hoemsbu
  • Visit the iconic Mardalen Waterfall, Norway's highest free-falling waterfall
  • Cycle Aursjøvegen Mountain Road (over the course of two days)
  • Climb the spectacular Innerdalstårnet
  • Experience fantastic views from the top of Ekkertinden
  • Stay in cozy accommodations such as Hoemsbu, Renndølsetra, and Budsjord Pilgrim Farm

The Northwestern part of Norway includes Sunndalen, Rauma, the coastal areas outside Molde, and further up past Kristiansund. Of course, we will not visit all these places in just one week, that would be a bit excessive, so we have therefore selected what we believe are some of the highlights and hidden gems of this region. The common denominator is of course, as always, spectacular nature, from the windswept and wild coast to the dramatic inland where fjord arms, mountains, waterfalls, and idyllic lakes go hand in hand.

We start the trip in Åndalsnes and kickstart the week with a visit to one of the few vineyards in the country, called Tuen Wine Farm. The next day we put on our hiking boots for the hike over the spectacular Hoemskaret, a mountain pass wedged between dramatic mountains. Then the trip goes even further into the valley, where we will cycle Aursjøvegen Mountain Road over the course of two days. From Mardalen Waterfall we cycle through Eikesdalen Valley before embarking on the rather steep climb up to Aursjø Mountain Cabin. Here we have a real challenge ahead of us! The next day is fortunately much easier since all trips up a mountain also involve a trip down. We arrive at Sunndalsøra where we will be transported to Innerdalen, for our climb up one of Norway's most beautiful mountains, called Innerdalstårnet. And last but not least, on the way to our final accommodation we will hike up Ekkertinden as well since it is so conveniently located right by the road we are driving on.

Day 1:Welcome to Åndalsnes!

Day 2:Hike over Hoemskaret Mountain Pass

After breakfast, we are ready for our first real hike of the trip! We check out of the hotel before we are transported to Rabben where the hike starts. The first half of the trip goes uphill where we slowly but surely approach Hoemskaret. Around us, and on all sides we have views of dramatic mountains, the most striking is perhaps Gjuratinden to our right. After we have reached Hoemskaret, the trip goes down towards Eikesdalen Lake before we finally arrive at Hoemsbu where we will spend the night. Maybe a swim is tempting upon arrival? In the evening we prepare dinner together from the selection at the cabin.

Day 3:Biking trip over Aursjøvegen Mountain Road (Part 1)

Today will be a challenging day. From Hoemsbu we take a boat over to Vike Farm on the other side of the lake where our transport is waiting for us. From here we drive to Mardalen Waterfall where we first take a short walk up to the waterfall before we hop on the bikes and head into Eikesdalen Valley. When we are halfway into the valley we start the climb up to Aursjø Mountain Cabin. This is a tough, but also very spectacular part of the bike ride so we recommend everyone to grind their teeth together and work their way up the mountainside. Our escort car makes sure that everyone gets up, and if it gets too tiring for someone, they will be transported the last stretch. On arrival at Aursjø Mountain Cabin, we check-in before a 3-course dinner awaits in the evening.

Day 4:Biking trip over Aursjøvegen Mountain Road (Part 2)

Every trip up a mountain also means a trip down, in other words, we are ready for part 2 of the bike ride over Aursjøvegen Mountain Road. Today's stage is considerably easier than yesterday's where we stroll down towards Sunndalsøra. However, it is almost 15 kilometers of mountain terrain at first, so we have to leave some strength behind today as well. If the group is interested, we also make a short stop at the beautiful Torbuvollen Farm, where we can buy locally produced food. Upon arrival at Sunndalsøra, we will be transported further into Innerdalen Mountain Valley where we will spend the next two nights. We take the backpacks with us and walk the last three kilometers from the parking lot and into Renndølsetra. One of Norway's most beautiful mountain valleys opens up for us, and on the horizon, we see tomorrow's goal, Innerdalstårnet. We check-in at our accommodation before we enjoy a lovely 3-course dinner in the evening.

Day 5:We conquer Innerdalstårnet!

We are ready for one of the absolute highlights of the trip. Today we are going to climb Innerdalstårnet. We enjoy a delicious breakfast at our accommodation before we get ready. However, we do not need to walk far before the steep ascent begins. At the foot of the mountain, the trail shoots upwards, getting steeper as we continue to the summit. This can be a demanding hike for many, so if it gets too high or too steep for some it is of course no shame in turning around. We take one step at a time and work our way up the terrain before we finally stand on top where we can let go of the jubilation, if not the view from the top leaves us speechless... Back at the accommodation, we enjoy a relaxing afternoon before a 3-course dinner awaits in the evening.

Day 6:One last hike, Ekkertinden

Unfortunately, we are closing in on the end of the trip, but before that, we have time for one last hike. From Innerdalen Valley we are transported to Gjøra in Sunndalen where we go up to Ekkertinden, a mountain that has been called Sunndalen's answer to the Pulpit Rock. On the way up we go via the beautiful Vollasetra, a self-service DNT cabin that is idyllically located in the lush, green valley side. From the top of Ekkertinden, we can enjoy fantastic views of the surrounding area. After we have taken in all the impressions, we go down again for our transport to the last accommodation, Budsjord Pilgrim Farm which is located right at the heart of Dovre, a beautiful mountain valley. Here we are served a delicious 3-course dinner in the evening. We spend the last hours of the day reminiscing about the week we have shared together.

Physical level

3/6 Physical

Some segments of the journey may prove challenging. It's essential to possess a solid level of fitness prior to departure. Persistence will be required in reaching the trip's goal.

Comfort level

3/6 Comfort

Simple accommodations, such as cabins or guesthouses, often with multi-bed rooms. Sometimes with bunk beds and often with a shared bathroom.

Risk level

2/6 Risk

Activities/trips with little risk. There are usually few incidents and they are usually of such a nature that they can be dealt with locally.

Traning and preparations

The different day hikes will involve 4-8 hours of moderate, and sometimes difficult hiking. The path can at times be steep, rocky, and slippery if it rains. You should have previous hiking experience with similar conditions. Expect some easy scrambling at certain locations. Be prepared to be challenged if these conditions are new to you, or train for such hikes before the trip begins.

Accommodation

We stay in unique and welcoming accommodations within the area such as Grand Hotel Bellevue, Hoemsbu, Aursjøhytta, Renndølsetra and Budsjord Pilegrimsgård.

Other information

It is a criteria that you pack in a backpack and not in a bag. This is because we will need to carry all our own luggage when hiking the 3 kilometers from the parking lot and into Renndølsetra on day 4. Therefore, use a slightly larger backpack for your main luggage and bring a small day backpack in addition to this. The day backpack needs room for the most necessary items such as food, water, snacks, and some extra clothes.

How to get there

The easiest way to get to our meeting point at Åndalsnes train station is to either take the train from Oslo via Dombås or from Trondheim via Dombås. This can be booked through VY.

Travel to Oslo by international flights. Oslo Gardermoen Airport is the main gateway to our country with good connections to all the major airports in Europe and several in the Middle East. You will also find direct flights to Oslo from several cities in United States with for example SAS and Norse Atlantic Airways, and direct flights from China and Thailand.

Travel to Trondheim by domestic flights with SAS, Norwegian or Widerøe

Notes regarding the itinerary

Please take into consideration that the itinerary above only is an example itinerary. This means that the day-to-day program is flexible, and that it can be adjusted to you and your travel partners preferences.
