Aurland, Flåm and Hardanger

The best of the west

Aurland, Flåm and Hardanger

The best of the west

From USD 2561

Join us on a five day exploration of the fjord landscapes in Western Norway. Hold on tight and don't miss a thing - highlights lurk around every corner! By combining some local gems with a couple of world renowned attractions we aim for your heart. Get ready to fall in love with a new country - we give you (in our opinion), the best of the west.

Highlights

  • Fjord cruise from Bergen to Aurland, through Norway's longest fjord, Sognefjorden
  • Farm visit and tasting session at Skjerdal Stølsysteri
  • Hike to Hovdungo for glorious views of the Aurlandfjord
  • The world-famous Flåm Railway
  • Cider tasting session in Hardanger
  • Hike to Bondhusvatnet, one of Norway's most photogenic lakes
  • Visit at the Rosendal Barony, the only one of its kind here in Norway

Five days aint to long, but boy have we managed to compress a whole lot of adventure into these few days. And the best part of it is that we don't even need to rush it. This is a slow-paced trip.  We kick it all of with a stunning fjord cruise departing from Bergen heading for Aurland deep into the Sognefjord. Here we will visit a local farm producing differents gods that most definitely will tickle your taste buds. For out-of-this-world views of the area we will hike to Hovdungo, an old farm situated in the hillside above Aurland.

And of course, since we already are in this area, we cant leave out one of the most popular attractions around. The Flåm Railway is also a part of this itinerary, taking us from Flåm all the way up to Myrdal where we will continue further onto Voss and Hardanger where other highlights await. A cider tasting session - check, a good nights sleep at the glorious Hotel Ullensvang (yes, they have an infinity pool here) - check, a spectacular hike to Bondhusvatnet - check, and finally a visit to the Rosendal Barony, the only one of its kind here in Norway - check. Sounds tempting? Check.

Day 1:Into the fjords!

Rise and shine, your adventure is underway! We meet up by the ferry dock early in the morning for our fjord cruise to Aurland. Five hours, and 250 photos later (yes, it is that beautiful here) we have reached our destination. After checking in to our accommodation for the next two nights we head to Skjerdal, a small village at the end of road where we will hike up to Skjerdal Stølsysteri. Here we will taste some delicious local produce before heading back to our accommodation. In the evening a 3-course dinner awaits. Not a bad start to our Norwegian adventure.

Day 2:Hike to Hovdungo

On our second day in Aurland we head for another highlight in the area. Hovdungo is an old farm situated on a small plateau in the hillside above Aurland, not the most famous attraction in the area, sort of a hidden gem, but this, of course, gives us just another incentive to hike up here. There will be fewer tourist but equally great views over the Aurlandsfjord and the nearby mountains - classic Norwegian fjord scenery! We enjoy our packed lunch up top at Hovdungo before we hike back down again to our accommodation. In the afternoon we enjoy a fjord sauna before a delicious 3-course dinner awaits in the evening.

Day 3:The Flåm Railway and cider tasting in Hardanger

The Flåm Railway was originally built to connect the fjord villages dotted around the Sognefjord to the railway line going between Oslo and Bergen. It still does the job if needed, but most of the passengers doing this one hour stretch of well crafted engineering are travelers keen to experience something extraordinary. We will embark on the same journey today, going all the way up to Myrdal, past spectacular mountains, thundering waterfalls and through old tunnels carved out by humans. From Myrdal we hop on another train that will take us to Voss where we will drive to Ulvik in Hardanger for a delicious cider tasting session at Syse Farm. In the afternoon we continue to Hotel Ullensvang where we will spend the night by the shores of the Hardangerfjord. In the evening dinner awaits.

Day 4:Hike to Bondhusvatnet

One of the most beloved paintings for us Norwegians is called Brudeferd in Hardanger. Finished in 1848, it depicts a weeding ceremony in the most romantic way possible: A lake, a boat with people celebrating, lush nature, dramatic mountains, wast glaciers in the distance and sunny weather - can you imagine, sunny weather! So when the word Hardanger pops up, a lot of Norwegians almost automatically tend to think in these terms. And one of the places in Hardanger where more or less all these ingredients are present is our goal of the day, Bondhusvatnet. There's probably not a wedding ceremony here, and we can only cross our fingers for sunny weather, but either way, we are in for a good day! The hike is not too long or too streneous so we will walk in a comfortable pace and enjoy lunch while there. In the afternoon we continue further south to Rosendal where we will spend the night. 3-course dinner in the evening, of course.

Day 5:Activity of choice and fjord cruise back to Bergen

On our final day in Western Norway we can choose between two different activities. Either visit the Rosendal Barony, an old caste built in 1665 by the danish-norwegian king Christian V, or do a short hike to either Rishammar or Hjartås, two small hills in close proximity to Rosendal, for glorious views of the southern Hardangerfjord. It is of course possible to split the group if there are different opinions on this matter. In the afternoon we say our goodbyes by the ferry dock in Rosendal before a fjord cruise will take you back to either Bergen Airport or downtown Bergen, unfortunately leaving the best of the west behind. We hope that you've had an amazing time with us!

Physical level

2/6 Physical

We need to exert some effort to reach our destination. With a good level of fitness and determination, these journeys are manageable for the majority of participants. Being active in daily life is a beneficial preparation.

Comfort level

4/6 Comfort

Simple to good quality inns, such as small family hotels, B&Bs and agrotourism (farmhouses), usually with private bathrooms.

Risk level

2/6 Risk

Activities/trips with little risk. There are usually few incidents and they are usually of such a nature that they can be dealt with locally.

Traning and preparations

This is a trip that is suitable for those who have done some hiking in the mountains before, and enjoy being active outdoors. The terrain we we will hike in can be steep and at some times exposed, but the trails are well marked and the hikes are not too long.

Accommodation

We spend the nights at some of the nicest accommodations in the area, such as Vangsgaarden/Hotel Aurlandsfjord, Hotel Ullensvang and Rosendal Turisthotell. If you are traveling alone, you will share a double/twin room with someone of the same sex.

If you are traveling alone and want a single room, you can choose it when signing up. This comes at an extra of 4.500 NOK per person.

Other information

The boat from Bergen leaves early in the morning, so we recommend arriving the day before. Then you also have some time to explore this beautiful city. Bergen is easily accessible by both train and plane from Oslo. It is also possible to reach Bergen by plane from other Norwegian cities, and from cities abroad such as Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, etc.

We ask you to bring a large piece of luggage (we recommend a duffel bag, this is easier to handle in the terrain we travel in) for clothes, hygiene items and other necessary things that you need for the trip. We also ask you to bring a daypack that you can use when we are hiking.

Equipment list

This list is intended as a guideline, so that we have what we need regardless of the weather we get on the trip. Remember that you can also get used hiking equipment that works perfectly. Get in touch if you have any questions. TIP: We recommend that you have the most important hiking equipment in your hand luggage, for example hiking boots and gore-tex jacket/trousers.
