Hiking in Madeira

From Levada Trails to Sky-High Peaks

Hiking in Madeira

From Levada Trails to Sky-High Peaks

From USD 3420

Madeira is always in bloom, with a pleasant climate year-round. It’s a place where, in many ways, time has stood still far out in the ocean. The historic levadas are ancient waterways that have laid the foundation for hiking opportunities unlike any other in the world. Trails run alongside the narrow canals, and in some places, the engineering behind them is nothing short of life-threatening. Our hike is varied, ranging from flat waterways in the forest to mountainsides, coastal trails, and high peaks on beautiful Madeira.

Highlights

  • Levada hike
  • Madeira’s highest mountain range
  • Ponta do São Lourenço – Madeira’s “Lofoten”
  • Visit to Porto Moniz
  • Natural lava pools
  • Funchal

Madeira has achieved what many other destinations fail to do: fine-tuning tourism so that it never feels overwhelming, whether you’re hiking along a levada or taking a dip at one of the ocean pools.

Madeira is strongly characterized by its volcanic origins, with a challenging infrastructure featuring many narrow roads and inaccessible nooks and crannies. Combined with its location - which offers consistently stable temperatures and a weather front from the northeast that gives the island a lush landscape - this makes it the perfect island to explore. Over the course of our six days, we’ll go on varied hikes that include everything from levadas to secluded valleys, bustling hiking trails, and coastal walks. We’ll visit Madeira’s highest mountain range; if we’re lucky, we’ll catch a sunrise and enjoy a magnificent view of Madeira’s beautiful and varied landscape. Those who wish can join an exciting canyon hike and swim in natural volcanic pools. We’ll be staying at a high-quality hotel in Funchal for the entire week.

In 2017, Madeira was named the world’s best island at the World Travel Awards - the travel industry’s equivalent of the Oscars. For the second year in a row! On this trip, we’ll show you why.

Day 2:Madeira's "Lofoten"

Ponta de São Lourenço is Madeira's answer to Lofoten in miniature – a raw and windswept peninsula where the landscape shifts from green to golden, with the ocean on both sides. The trip out toward the tip of the island resembles a mountain trip on the outer side of Lofoten: bare ridges, rock formations, low vegetation, and a constant feeling of being right in the elements. On clear days you can see all the way to the Desertas Islands.

Day 3:Vereda do Fanal

Vereda do Fanal goes from the Paul da Serra plateau (approximately 1400 m) and offers open plains and views of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Gradually the trail winds downward to the mystical forest area of Fanal, a foggy, green landscape where crooked laurel trees stand like living sculptures. On humid days the atmosphere is almost otherworldly – like walking right into a fairy tale. The many cows roaming and grazing contribute to a peaceful atmosphere. The ancient laurel forest (Laurisilva) is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. This is a relatively easy to moderate trip, but with some longer sections that can be muddy, especially after rain.

Day 4:Madeira's highest mountain (1862 m) or sunrise at the highest peaks

Today we are heading to the highest mountain area in Madeira. We can drive all the way up to Pico Do Arieiro, catch the sunrise, and take a hike among the highest peaks in Madeira. If the trail is open we walk to Pico Ruivo, the highest mountain in Madeira. We look out over volcanic rock formations and green valleys and mountain sides, if the weather is on our side. It is a hilly terrain with stairs, and trails that wind around the mountains. We walk calmly and enjoy nature and the views along the way. We return to the hotel by bus.

On our trips, it is important to understand that we often will be traveling far off the beaten track. We will, of course, do everything we can to assist if anything should happen, but a potential rescue operation can be demanding. It is therefore extremely important that all participants arrive well-prepared and ready to handle unforeseen situations.

Training and Preparations

This is an easy to moderately challenging trip, with daily hikes in occasionally hilly terrain lasting up to 5–6 hours. We’ll take our time on each stage, walk at a leisurely pace, and enjoy the scenery along the way.

We’ll be climbing up to 700 meters and carrying daypacks on the hike. You should be experienced in hiking and in generally good physical condition to participate. Hikes in the countryside or “hut-to-hut” hikes are good preparation. Some sections may feel a bit exposed to some people, but no special technical skills are required, and we’ll follow marked trails the entire way.

 Visas, Vaccinations and Health

Before embarking on our journey together, we kindly remind all trip participants to check their respective country's visa status and vaccination requirements. Ensuring your travel documents are in order is a crucial step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure.

Norwegian citizens do not need a visa to enter Portugal, but be sure to bring a valid passport and a copy of it. See also the current entry and visa requirements at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ country pages.

If you are over 67 years old, you should have a thorough medical check-up before your trip. Make your doctor aware that this is a trip involving physical exertion and moving off the beaten track.

It is important that you complete all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of prior to and during the trip. Relevant health information that may affect the trip should also be communicated to the guide at the start of the trip. *Note* - If you are on regular medication, have known allergies or anything similar, you must always bring your personal medication with you.

See the overview on FHI´s pages on travel health advice. For vaccination and guidance, please contact Sentrum Reisemedisin: Reisemedisin.no, or contact your local medical office.

Additional Information

For trips where flights are not included, please check our website to confirm that the departure is guaranteed before booking your own plane tickets. For each trip, we require a minimum number of confirmed participants before the departure can be guaranteed.

We’ll be staying in cozy hotels in double rooms throughout the trip.

It is not always easy to get hold of gluten-free wholemeal bread, lactose-free alternatives or to accommodate other food preferences. If you have any allergies, please let us know in the registration form and we will try to accommodate you as best we can. However, we would still recommend that anyone with special dietary needs bring some alternatives in the form of, for example, a packet of crispbread, energy bars or similar that you know you can eat.
