Tour de Monte Rosa

The Alpine Classic between Italy and Switzerland

Tour de Monte Rosa

The Alpine Classic between Italy and Switzerland

From USD 3327

This is a beautiful week-long hike with almost no other tourists. Over the course of the week, we’ll cross stunning mountain passes, hike through picturesque valleys, visit charming villages, and enjoy views of towering mountains and vast glaciers. We’ll pass through charming Alpine villages such as Alagna in Italy and Saas-Fee and Zermatt in Switzerland. The hike is physically demanding with significant elevation gain, but we have the whole day at our disposal, and the experiences are well worth the effort. The Monte Rosa circuit is for those who want a wilder and quieter experience than what’s found in the most popular mountain areas of the Alps.

Departure is just around the corner this July - would you like to join us? Get in touch, and we’ll check availability at the lodgings.

Highlights

  • Spectacular views of the Monte Rosa massif and the Matterhorn
  • Mountain huts with beautiful views
  • Lush green meadows
  • Charming villages such as Alagna, Saas Fee, and Zermatt
  • The trip concludes in charming Lado d’Orta

The Monte Rosa massif is vast and consists of seven peaks, all over 4,000 meters. The highest is the Dufourspitze, which, at 4,634 m, is the highest peak in Switzerland and the second-highest highest in the entire Alps. We’ll explore various historical trails and will need to take lifts and buses to get around during this week-long hike. We alternate between staying in mountain huts and hotels down in the villages, and the trip ends where we started, in the charming ski resort of Alagna in Italy.

Many consider the Tour du Monte Rosa to be one of the more challenging long-distance routes in the Alps. The daily stages are long, and several of them feature both steep climbs and long, challenging descents. In addition, one of the stages in particular can be somewhat challenging for those with a fear of heights. If you feel you’re in good shape and dream of enjoying the views of the Matterhorn and several of the Alps’ most beautiful mountains, we hope you’ll take on the challenge and join us on this week-long trip.

A view from a wooden balcony looks out over traditional stone-roofed houses in an alpine village, surrounded by steep, green mountains under a partly cloudy sky.

Day 1:To the Alps

Day 2:Alagna to Macugnaga

In the morning, we pack our backpacks for all the days in the mountains, and leave behind what we don't need at the hotel in Alagna. A short bus ride takes us to Rifugio Pastore (1575 m), before we begin the actual hike. Today's stage goes over Colle Del Turlo (2738 m), and here we follow old, historical paths. We hike from vibrant green meadows up to spectacular views, before arriving in the small Italian town of Macugnaga on the border with Switzerland. Here, we check into a cozy hotel for the night.

Day 3:Descent to Saas Fee

We start the day with a gondola up to a mountain lodge (2796 m). Since today's stage is relatively short, we can have a coffee on the veranda of the mountain lodge and enjoy the view before hiking about a hundred meters of elevation up to the Monte Moro Pass. Here we say "Arrivederci" to Italy and enter Switzerland. From the pass, it goes downhill toward Mattmark, and the path gradually gets flatter until we reach the lake. From the other end of the lake, a bus takes us down to the famous, car-free, and charming ski resort of Saas Fee. In Saas Fee, we stay at a pleasant hotel.

On our trips, it is important to understand that we often will be traveling far off the beaten track. We will, of course, do everything we can to assist if anything should happen, but a potential rescue operation can be demanding. It is therefore extremely important that all participants arrive well-prepared and ready to handle unforeseen situations.

Training and Preparations

This is a challenging hike with many relatively long ascents and descents. We’ll be hiking six days in a row, often at altitudes between 2,000 and 3,000 meters. This hike is for experienced hikers who are in generally good physical shape.

Longer hikes in the countryside, “cabin-to-cabin” trips, or camping in the mountains are great ways to get in shape. Uphill training with a backpack can also be a good workout.

We’ll be carrying everything we need for the entire mountain hike in our backpacks, so pack wisely. We’ll start off strong with a long uphill climb, followed by an equally long downhill on the other side of the pass. It’s good to keep in mind that the distances themselves may not seem that challenging, but when you factor in the elevation gain and loss, the stages become tougher. This can also be hard on the knees.

Visas, Vaccinations and Health

Before embarking on our journey together, we kindly remind all trip participants to check their respective country's visa status and vaccination requirements. Ensuring your travel documents are in order is a crucial step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure.

Norwegian citizens do not need a visa to enter Italy, but be sure to bring a valid passport and a copy of it. See also the current entry and visa regulations on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' country pages.

If you are over 67 years old, you should undergo a thorough medical examination before the trip. Let your doctor know that this is a trip involving physical exertion and that we’ll be traveling off the beaten path.

If you are over 67 years old, you should have a thorough medical check-up before your trip. Make your doctor aware that this is a trip involving physical exertion and moving off the beaten track.

It is important that you complete all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of prior to and during the trip. Relevant health information that may affect the trip should also be communicated to the guide at the start of the trip. *Note* - If you are on regular medication, have known allergies or anything similar, you must always bring your personal medication with you.

See the overview on FHI´s pages on travel health advice. For vaccination and guidance, please contact Sentrum Reisemedisin: Reisemedisin.no.

Additional Information

For trips where flights are not included, please check our website to confirm that the departure is guaranteed before booking your own plane tickets. For each trip, we require a minimum number of confirmed participants before the departure can be guaranteed.

During the week, we’ll be staying at hotels and in mountain cabins. The mountain cabins are relatively simple—with shared dormitory-style rooms in some places. You don’t need a sleeping bag or sleeping pad, but everyone must bring a sheet bag for use in the cabins. At the hotels (4 nights), we’ll stay in twin/double rooms, or sometimes in shared rooms. Throughout the trip, we’ll carry everything we need with us—so it’s best to pack light. We’ll have the option to leave luggage in Alagna.

On Day 4, we’ll be hiking diagonally across a slope, and parts of this day may be challenging for people who are very afraid of heights. Please contact us if you’re unsure whether this trip is right for you.

It is not always easy to get hold of gluten-free wholemeal bread, lactose-free alternatives or to accommodate other food preferences. If you have any allergies, please let us know in the registration form and we will try to accommodate you as best we can. However, we would still recommend that anyone with special dietary needs bring some alternatives in the form of, for example, a packet of crispbread, energy bars or similar that you know you can eat.

Equipment list

This list is intended as a guideline, so that we have what we need regardless of the weather we get on the trip. Remember that you can also get used outdoor equipment that works perfectly. Get in touch if you have any questions. TIP: We recommend that you have the most important equipment in your hand luggage, for example hiking boots and gore-tex jacket/trousers.

Obligatory

Testimonial

Very great and varied trip with a nice mix of high passes, lush valleys, huts high up in the mountains, and comfortable hotels in cozy towns. There is a lot of logistics involved here with gondolas, taxis, and buses, and Norrøna Adventure has full control over it :-) Recommended for those who love to hike; there are long stages and tough ascents and descents.
