Unique Mountains and Beautiful Chioggia

The Heart of the Dolomites

Unique Mountains and Beautiful Chioggia

From USD 3628

From the jagged peaks of the Dolomites to the historic canals of the Adriatic, this week long trip pairs world-class alpine trekking with unforgetable local culture. Walk through UNESCO-listed landscapes, sleep in traditional mountsin huts, and refuel with authentic regional cuisine wrapping up your adventure in beautiful Chioggia.

Highlights

  • Cinque Torri
  • The Olympic city of Cortina
  • Lago di Braies
  • Chioggia - "Venice's little sister"
  • Authentic Italian culinary delights and beverages

This amazing mountain tour begins in Cortina d'Ampezzo in the Dolomites in northern Italy. The 1956 Olympic city is located at 1200 m above sea level and the mountains around the city were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009. The Dolomites are different from the Alps and are characterized by sharper mountains and high, colorful rock faces, narrow gorges and lush valleys.

With our backpacks filled with what we need for a five-day hike, we go from rifugio (mountain hut) to rifugio in the heart of the Dolomites, which provides one of the finest hiking experiences in the area. Parts of the tour follow the Alta Via 1. We take in many of the highlights along the 80 km long route - and are surrounded by unique nature and high, snow-capped mountains. Our selected mountain huts offer a great location or especially good food.

We end our stay in beautiful Chioggia, a charming and authentic fishing town where you can experience colorful buildings from the water and enjoy life on the beach.

Day 2:Start by Lago di Braies

After a good breakfast, we leave behind any luggage we don't need on the mountain hike before driving to the starting point of our hike north of Cortina. The Dolomites mountain range was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009 and is known for its lush valleys and high, steep limestone mountains – and even before we start walking we understand why so many people are fascinated by the Dolomites. Today's stage starts at Lago di Braies, 1500 meters above sea level. We walk along the water followed by a good climb on gravel up to Rifugio Biella (2330 m above sea level). We are quickly inside the mountain and can enjoy beautiful views already on the first slopes from the water. We continue hiking past Sennes and down to Fodara where we will spend the first night in the mountains. This is a good first stage, but we will enjoy the day, the view and the company in the mountains.

Day 4:Over mountain pass

We continue south and eventually get a view of the snow-capped Marmolada (3343 m), the highest mountain in the Dolomites. After the Forcella del Lago mountain pass (2490 m), a steep descent of almost 300 meters awaits before the trip continues upwards towards Forcella Lagazoui and the Rifugo Lagazoui mountain hut (2750 m). From here there is a great view that will touch our hearts, if the weather does not turn against us. It often clears up quickly after a possible shower. Here there are opportunities to take a sauna.

Day 5:Mountains with history

The mountainsides around us were the front line in World War I, where the forces of Italy and Austria/Hungary were firing at each other. The tunnel we will go through today was central to this warfare and has a lot of exciting history in its walls. The tunnel is about 300 meters high and 1 km long, and we come out about halfway up the mountain wall. From here, a path goes down to the Falzarego Pass (2105 meters above sea level). Those who want to save their knees can take the gondola down for an additional cost. From the Falzarego Pass, it gradually goes up towards and past the Averau mountain and to the Rifugio Averau (2413 meters above sea level). We will stay at Averau or at one of the nearby huts, and spend the afternoon in the Nuvolau / Cinque Torri area. Today's stage takes about 5 hours, a little longer if we choose an afternoon trip.

Day 6:Majestic experiences

Now we leave the beautiful massif around the Cinque Torri and head towards the Pelmo massif that looms in the distance. This is the longest day and it has a varied terrain. After we cross the Passo Giau pass, the terrain opens up with green plains. It becomes easy to walk with a beautiful view of the mountains we walk along. Pelmo gets closer and closer, until we find the parking lot where our bus is waiting. We are then driven to Chioggia (3-4 hours). Here we will experience the genuine charm of a living fishing village far away from the crowds.

Some segments of the journey may prove challenging. It's essential to possess a solid level of fitness prior to departure. Persistence will be required in reaching the trip's goal.

Comfort level

3/6 Comfort

Simple accommodations, such as cabins or guesthouses, often with multi-bed rooms. Sometimes with bunk beds and often with a shared bathroom.

Risk level

3/6 Risk

Activities/trips with some risk. Certain incidents may occur, and they may be of such a nature that they may require professional help.

Training and Preparations

This is a 5-day hike at an altitude of 2-3,000 metres, where we carry what we need on our backs.  It is an easy to moderately demanding trip, with daily hikes in occasionally hilly terrain lasting up to eight hours. We have plenty of time on the stages to go at a leisurely pace and enjoy nature along the way. We have up to 1000-1200 meters of ascent.

You should be used to walking and in normal good physical shape to participate. Longer hikes in the mountains, "day hikes" or multiday backpacking trips in the mountains are good ways to prepare. We have chosen to travel early (June) and late (September) in the hiking season, and in a normal year all or large parts of the route are snow-free. We hike at an altitude of up to 3,000 metres, but there are no altitude problems associated with the trip. Some parts may feel airy to some, but no special technical skills are necessary and we follow marked paths all the way.

Visas, Vaccinations and Health

Before embarking on our journey together, we kindly remind all tour participants to check their respective country's visa status and vaccination requirements. Ensuring your travel documents are in order is a crucial step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure.

Participants usually need a valid passport (normally valid for at least 6 months after the date of return). Check for your country's current visa rules.

If you are over 67, you should have a thorough medical check-up before your trip. Make your doctor aware that this is a trip involving physical exertion and moving off the beaten track.

It is important that you complete all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of prior to and during the tour. Relevant health information that may affect the tour should also be communicated to the guide at the start of the tour. *Note* - If you are on regular medication, have known allergies or anything similar, you must always bring your personal medication with you.

See the overview on FHI´s pages on travel health advice. For vaccination and guidance, please contact Sentrum Reisemedisin: Reisemedisin.no.

Additional Information

For trips where flights are not included, please check our website to confirm that the departure is guaranteed before booking your own plane tickets. For each trip, we require a minimum number of confirmed participants before the departure can be guaranteed.

In Cortina and Chioggia we spend the night in twin rooms in pleasant hotels, while in the mountains we stay in mountain huts with up to 12 beds, most of which are just us, while some we can share with other hikers. All the cabins are equipped with extra duvets and blankets and we only need a sleeping sheet liner on some departures. Bring earplugs if you know you need them.

We leave the rest of the luggage in Cortina.

It is not always easy to get hold of gluten-free wholemeal bread, lactose-free alternatives or to accommodate other dietary requirements.  On this trip there is a lot of light bread for breakfast and lunch. Enter in the registration form if you have allergies and we will try to accommodate as best we can. We would still recommend that those who have special food needs (and those who need extra nutrition for their packed lunch) bring some alternatives in the form of, for example, a pack of crackers, energy bars or similar that you know you can eat.

The kayak trip in Chioggia is voluntary and is ordered separately in the registration for the trip. We use stable kayaks in calm waters. Previous paddling experience is an advantage, but not a requirement.

Equipment list

This list is intended as a guideline, so that we have what we need regardless of the weather we get on the trip. Remember that you can also get used outdoor equipment that works perfectly. Get in touch if you have any questions. TIP: We recommend that you have the most important equipment in your hand luggage, for example hiking boots and gore-tex jacket/trousers.

Packing Tips

On some departures we need a sheet bag, it depends on what types of rooms we are assigned in the cabins. You will receive information about this in the departure letter that is sent out about 2 weeks before departure.

It is recommended to bring your own light indoor shoes.

Headlamp and thin gloves for safety and for the tunnel on day 5 (and possibly the gloves for kayaking as well).
