Capri and the Amalfi Coast

Hikes with panoramic views

From USD 3628

Join us on a journey to one of Europe’s most beautiful regions—the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy. In addition to being rich in history and culture, the natural scenery here is breathtakingly beautiful, with the blue Mediterranean surrounding the green Sorrento Peninsula. Here, we’ll experience breathtaking panoramic views from the lookouts we reach on our daily hikes, and enjoy authentic Italian home-cooked meals and fine wine every single day.

Highlights

  • Blue sea and beautiful nature
  • Idyllic Italian towns
  • Good food and wine
  • The natural gem of Capri

The Amalfi Coast is a popular destination for tourists, but on this trip we’ll choose routes that very few tourists know about. Daily hikes up into the hills will treat us to stunning panoramic views of the blue sea. In the evenings, it’s time to enjoy life—the Italians themselves are firmly convinced that they have the world’s best food, and they do everything they can to make us feel the same way—and here we’ll be treated to authentic, Italian, homemade, and organic food! Virtually everything we eat during this week is grown and prepared within a few kilometers’ radius. And Italian wine surely needs no further introduction.

Although we’ll experience beautiful scenery, organic and delicious food, Italian culture and history, and a touch of Greek mythology, you’ll also come to love many of the local characters we meet along the way.

Day 2:Beautiful Capri

The trip's first day of hiking is a reality, and we start right after breakfast. We take the trip on the west side of the island. This coastal hike is called I Fortini, and named after fortifications built by the British during the war against Napoleon. We head south and take a break at the lighthouse where there might be opportunities for a refreshing swim. We will also head up to Monte Solari, the island's highest point at 590 m. Here we have fantastic views of turquoise sea on all sides, with the Sorrento Peninsula to the east and Henrik Ibsen's favorite island, Ischia, to the northwest. We will explore this island for one and a half days. The order of the trip destinations is decided based on weather and other things, to give you the best possible experience.

Day 3:Into the Sorrento coast

We enjoy the last hours of the stay on the island with a new hike, this time on the east side. We get transport to Capri town which is our starting point for the morning excursion. We hike a loop via Punta Tragara, with a great view towards the Faraglioni rocks. We also have time for a quick touch of Capri town before we travel to the mainland for new adventures. After a ferry and bus trip via Sorrento we start the afternoon's hike in Termini, a small town on the Sorrento coast. Here we eat lunch. We hike to Punta Campanella, a beautiful viewpoint with a lighthouse right at the outermost point of the Amalfi Coast. From there we walk back to Nerano where our next accommodation is located.

Day 4:A quiet morning and the Path of the Gods

Today there will be a free morning, where you can explore the small town of Nerano or enjoy life on the beach. Maybe a dip sounds tempting. After lunch we set out on the Amalfi Coast's perhaps most famous stretch, Sentiero degli Dei, or the Path of the Gods. The view from the path is great, from here we can see the sun sink into the Mediterranean Sea. After a night in Nerano, we move today to a cozy farming village, 650 meters above sea level. Here we will stay the last four nights of the trip.

For departures with Norrøna Adventure guides:

  • 24-hour emergency response
  • Guides trained in first aid in the field
  • Basic first aid equipment available
  • Cooperation with Turlegen.no for medical advice

On our trips, it is important to understand that we often will be traveling far off the beaten track. We will, of course, do everything we can to assist if anything should happen, but a potential rescue operation can be demanding. It is therefore extremely important that all participants arrive well-prepared and ready to handle unforeseen situations.

Physical level

2/6 Physical

We need to exert some effort to reach our destination. With a good level of fitness and determination, these journeys are manageable for the majority of participants. Being active in daily life is a beneficial preparation.

Comfort level

4/6 Comfort

Simple to good quality inns, such as small family hotels, B&Bs and agrotourism (farmhouses), usually with private bathrooms.

Risk level

2/6 Risk

Activities/trips with little risk. There are usually few incidents and they are usually of such a nature that they can be dealt with locally.

Training and Preparations

This is an easy to moderately challenging trip, but it includes daily hikes in occasionally hilly terrain lasting up to eight hours. We’ll start off relatively easy on Capri, and then it will get more challenging as the week goes on, with several steep ascents and descents, including some stairs.

You should be experienced in hiking and in generally good physical condition to participate. Longer hikes in the countryside and, for example, “cabin-to-cabin” hikes or camping trips in the mountains are good preparation.

If you don’t want to participate in all the hikes, you can take it easy at the lodgings or along the coast.

Visas, Vaccinations and Health

Before embarking on our journey together, we kindly remind all trip participants to check their respective country's visa status and vaccination requirements. Ensuring your travel documents are in order is a crucial step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure.

Norwegian citizens do not need a visa to enter Italy. See also the current entry and visa requirements at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ country pages.

If you are over 67 years old, you should have a thorough medical check-up before your trip. Make your doctor aware that this is a trip involving physical exertion and moving off the beaten track.

It is important that you complete all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of prior to and during the trip. Relevant health information that may affect the trip should also be communicated to the guide at the start of the trip. *Note* - If you are on regular medication, have known allergies or anything similar, you must always bring your personal medication with you.

See the overview on FHI´s pages on travel health advice. For vaccination and guidance, please contact Sentrum Reisemedisin: Reisemedisin.no.

Additional Information

For trips where flights are not included, please check our website to confirm that the departure is guaranteed before booking your own plane tickets. For each trip, we require a minimum number of confirmed participants before the departure can be guaranteed.

We stay at small, local guesthouses or hotels, in shared double rooms. In some places, multiple rooms share a bathroom. On Capri, we’ll be staying at two different accommodations; the same applies in Nerano and San Lazzaro if the group is full and there are several single rooms.

Meals will be a mix of dining at restaurants and cafes and packed lunches on hikes, largely based on local ingredients. Please indicate any allergies on the registration form, and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

Equipment list

This list is intended as a guideline, so that we have what we need regardless of the weather we get on the trip. Remember that you can also get used outdoor equipment that works perfectly. Get in touch if you have any questions. TIP: We recommend that you have the most important equipment in your hand luggage, for example hiking boots and gore-tex jacket/trousers.

Obligatory

Not too thick, bring more layers if necessary. Top and bottom.

Wool or synthetic. Avoid cotton.

We recommend thin wool.

Fleece or wool.

Waterproof jacket and pants.

Bring waterproof shoes/boots that you are familiar with.

Equipment

Avoid bringing a suitcase, they are more difficult to transport between hotels.

In this pack, you’ll carry what you need during the day on the hike: extra clothes, food, water, snacks, etc. Remember a rain cover. Around 30 liters, give or take, is suitable.

Personal medicines and, for example, band-aids, blister plaster, sports tape, throat lozenges, nasal drops, Paracetamol/Ibuprofen, stomach regulators, etc.
We need to know about all medicines you are taking, in case something happens.

Tooth brush, tooth paste, small towel, ear plugs, wet wipes, biodegradable soap, etc.

You should be able to bring 2-3 litres of water.

Passport, tickets, bank card, proof of vaccination andproof of insurance. Remember to have a copy of important documents on your phone and/or somewhere in your bag.

Recommended

Hat or headband

Footwear
Equipment

Light. Have to be foldable or telescope.

Remember new/extra batteries.

Toilet paper, antibac, and waste bags for the paper. Remember leave no trace.

Nuts, chocolate, energy bars, etc.

Packing Tips

Temperatures can be around 20 degrees during the day and drop to 12–15 at night. We should be prepared for a shower. For trips around Easter, we need to be prepared for all kinds of weather and bring both shorts and warm, waterproof clothing.

For this hike, lightweight hiking boots or trekking shoes are sufficient. We’ll mostly be walking on good, well-established trails, but there are some ascents and descents, so sturdy soles and ankle support are a plus.

You must be prepared to carry your luggage a few hundred meters between the bus, boat, and accommodations. On the hikes, you’ll only carry a daypack.
