Kayaking in Greece

Crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea

The Ionian Sea in Greece is a kayaker's dream, with its crystal clear waters, beautiful beaches, dark caves and idyllic fishing villages. The local Greek cuisine and exquisite traditional wines are the icing on the cake.

Highlights

  • The Ionian Islands with their beautiful scenery and picturesque villages
  • Camping on secluded beaches
  • Large blue water caves and caverns
  • Friendly, hospitable Greek culture

The Ionian Sea is known for its crystal clear waters and islands with lush pine and olive trees. We'll be exploring the archipelago, landing on several small, idyllic islands on our trip. Some of the islands are inhabited, others are not. We'll visit caves with crystal-clear water and magnificent stalactites, lagoons with rare birds, islands with high mountains and shady canyons, crystal springs and rare plants. Paddling in this beautiful, varied and wild archipelago, with its pleasant climate, delicious food and small, picturesque villages, is particularly delightful when the autumn darkness creeps in here at home.

Day by day

A vibrant harbor scene featuring a traditional blue and white fishing boat tied to a concrete pier piled with bright yellow fishing nets, looking across calm turquoise water toward a coastal village nestled on a lush, green hillside under a clear blue sky.

Day 1:Departure from Norway

We fly from Oslo in the afternoon and are met by our Greek friends at the airport in Athens when we land in the evening. We drive to the city of Rio (approx. 2 hours) and check in to our pleasant apartment hotel for the night. We arrive so late that we won't make it in time for dinner at the hotel, so we will stop along the way to have a simple meal.

Day 2:Transport to Lefkada and the first day in the kayak

We get up early in the morning and are driven to the island of Lefkada. Here, we meet our local kayak guides and go through the equipment, safety routines, and the day's paddling route. We start our paddling adventure from the harbor in Nydri and paddle to the small, privately owned island of Madouri. One of the greatest Greek poets, Aristotelis Valaoritis, used to live here on Madouri. His house is now a museum, and it is the only house on the island! We continue paddling for a few more nautical miles and arrive at Meganisi on the northeastern side. This area features a beautiful coastline with fjord-like formations, gorgeous beaches, and picturesque small villages. We paddle to Fanari beach, where we stop for lunch and a swim. After a good break, we paddle a few more kilometers and arrive at the idyllic Elia beach. Here, we stay overnight in a traditional guesthouse. After taking out the kayaks and having a shower, we enjoy dinner at a local taverna and take a nice walk to stretch our legs through idyllic Spartochori.

Day 3:We paddle to Kalamos

We take a refreshing morning swim in the crystal-clear water at Elia before breakfast. After breakfast and a good cup of coffee, we continue our kayaking trip. Our goal today is the green island of Kalamos, and for the next 4 nautical miles, we will be crossing over to the island. It is common to encounter dolphins here, so we hope to be lucky today! When we arrive at the lush island, we see that the trees grow all the way down to the water's edge. With turquoise water surrounded by impressive cypress trees, it is hard to resist a swim and a delicious lunch break. After eating and resting here on Episkopi beach, we paddle on to the village of Kalamos with its small, picturesque fishing harbor. We enjoy dinner and set up our camp for the night.

Day 4:From Kalamos to Kastos

We’ll have a simple breakfast on the beach, and once we’ve packed the kayak, we’ll paddle toward the island of Kastos. This is an easy day with a shorter stretch than the previous two days. But we’ll visit many beautiful beaches where we’ll have the chance not only to swim but also to snorkel in the crystal-clear water. It’s incredibly beautiful here even below the water’s surface! We’ll test our fishing skills, and if we’re lucky, we’ll cook the day’s catch for dinner! We’ll have lunch, enjoy kayaking, and relax in the sun. When we’re ready to go again, we’ll head to the small, nearly car-free village of Kastos for dinner and a short evening walk in the beautiful sunset. Here, we’ll stay at a cozy guesthouse for the next two nights.

Day 5:Kastos and kayak course

We’ve had several days of paddling in a row now, and today will be a “rest day” from paddling, but we won’t be sitting around doing nothing. Today there will be a kayaking course with local guides for those who want to join in. Educational and fun! In the afternoon, those who wish can go on a short paddle trip, take a walk on the island, or how about visiting the island’s museum of marine life? We’ll have dinner together or on our own at a charming local restaurant.

Day 6:Limestone cliffs and historic caves

We start the day with an early morning swim, with the longest paddling day of the trip ahead of us! Today, we will paddle along impressive, chalk-white limestone cliffs in a landscape that takes our breath away with all its colors and contrasts. The kayaks glide past caves and volcanic rock formations. The island of Meganisi, and particularly the "Papanikolis Cave," is considered the secret hiding place of the Greek submarine Papanikolis during World War II. The size of the cave is astounding, and it is actually the second largest in Greece. It is believed that the Papanikolis submarine would hide in this massive cave following its "blitzkrieg" against the Italian armada. It is a limestone cave that is currently partially submerged by the sea. This cave was also used by ships looking to anchor during bad weather. After this "history lesson," we paddle to several other caves (Giovanni) and continue to Rouda harbor, where we check into a cozy guesthouse for the night. We will find a nice taverna to enjoy dinner at this evening.

Day 7:Blue cave and snorkeling

We start the day with a good breakfast before getting our kayaks ready for the final day of paddling. Our first stop today is the most spectacular cave yet: "The Blue Cave," where we will go snorkeling and experience the marine life. After a refreshing experience in the water, we paddle onward along the coast of Lefkada, where the landscape constantly shifts from rugged cliffs to dense forest. We enjoy a nice picnic lunch on the beautiful Desimi beach and soak up the sun before paddling back toward Nydri. We reach our final destination, Nydri, where we check into our guesthouse and take a well-deserved shower before meeting up for a lovely farewell dinner together.

For departures with Norrøna Adventure guides:

  • Guides trained in first aid in the field

  • Cooperation with Turlegen.no for medical advice

On this trip, it is important to understand that we will be traveling far off the beaten track. We will of course do everything we can to assist if anything should happen, but any rescue operation could take longer than on other trips we organize. It is therefore extremely important that all participants are well prepared and ready to deal with unforeseen situations.

Physical level

3/6 Physical

Some segments of the journey may prove challenging. It's essential to possess a solid level of fitness prior to departure. Persistence will be required in reaching the trip's goal.

Comfort level

4/6 Comfort

Simple to good quality inns, such as small family hotels, B&Bs and agrotourism (farmhouses), usually with private bathrooms.

Risk level

2/6 Risk

Activities/trips with little risk. There are usually few incidents and they are usually of such a nature that they can be dealt with locally.

Training and Preparations

We recommend that you have a basic kayak course (wet card) and that you have done some paddling before. You need to be prepared to paddle every day, and on some crossings of a few hours, but we take breaks along the way to swim and stretch your legs.

We paddle between four and seven hours every day, excluding a "rest day", with daily stages of between 10 and 25 kilometers (5-14 NM). There will be good lunch breaks with swimming and relaxation along the way.

We paddle in double sea kayaks that are stable and easy to paddle. We have some single kayaks, so it is possible to request this, but we cannot guarantee anything. Please note that these are heavier to paddle, so we want you to have paddling experience if you request this. We know from experience that many people want a single kayak before departure, but often end up enjoying paddling a double kayak during the trip. It's both social and allows for photo breaks along the way. It's also easier to keep up with the rest of the group, who often paddle faster in a double kayak. If there are a lot of people who want single kayaks, we rotate between single and double.

Visas, Vaccinations and Health

Before embarking on our journey together, we kindly remind all tour participants to check their respective country's visa status and vaccination requirements. Ensuring your travel documents are in order is a crucial step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure.

Norwegian citizens do not need a visa to enter Greece, but please bring a valid passport and a copy of the passport. See also the current entry and visa regulations on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' country pages.

If you are over 67, you should have a thorough medical check-up before your trip. Make your doctor aware that this is a trip involving physical exertion and moving off the beaten track.

It is important that you complete all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of prior to and during the tour. Relevant health information that may affect the tour should also be communicated to the guide at the start of the tour. *Note* - If you are on regular medication, have known allergies or anything similar, you must always bring your personal medication with you.

See the overview on FHI´s pages on travel health advice. For vaccination and guidance, please contact Sentrum Reisemedisin: Reisemedisin.no.

Additional Information

For trips where flights are not included, please check our website to confirm that the departure is guaranteed before booking your own plane tickets. For each trip, we require a minimum number of confirmed participants before the departure can be guaranteed.

It is not always easy to get hold of gluten-free wholemeal bread, lactose-free alternatives or to accommodate other food preferences. If you have any allergies, please let us know in the registration form and we will try to accommodate you as best we can. However, we would still recommend that anyone with special dietary needs bring some alternatives in the form of, for example, a packet of crispbread, energy bars or similar that you know you can eat.

Equipment list

This list is intended as a guideline, so that we have what we need regardless of the weather we get on the trip. Remember that you can also get used outdoor equipment that works perfectly. Get in touch if you have any questions. TIP: We recommend that you have the most important equipment in your hand luggage, for example hiking boots and gore-tex jacket/trousers.

Obligatory

Clothing

Not too thick, bring more layers if necessary. Top and bottom.

Wool or synthetic. Avoid cotton.

We recommend thin wool.

Whatever you like to wear when paddling.

Fleece or wool.

Gore-Tex or similar. Must have a decent hood, and hold out wind and rain. Should have space for midlayers underneath. Ventilation under the arms is recommended.

Or bike gloves.

Footwear
Equipment

Personal medicines and, for example, band-aids, blister plaster, sports tape, throat lozenges, nasal drops, Paracetamol/Ibuprofen, stomach regulators, etc.
We need to know about all medicines you are taking, in case something happens.

Tooth brush, tooth paste, small towel, ear plugs, wet wipes, biodegradable soap, etc.

You should be able to bring 2-3 litres of water.

A solid pair, with dark glass.

Passport, tickets, bank card, proof of vaccination andproof of insurance. Remember to have a copy of important documents on your phone and/or somewhere in your bag.

Recommended

Clothing

Wool or synthetic.

Down or synthetic insulation.

Thin, ultra light.

Equipment

Use to carry equipment from kayak to camp.

To increase the comfort temperature in your sleeping bag.

Remember new/extra batteries.

Nuts, chocolate, energy bars, etc.

Packing Tips

Temperatures will likely range between 22–25 degrees during the day and around 14–17 degrees at night. We should expect some wind from time to time.

We recommend bringing water shoes for use in the kayak. These are easier to dry during the week-long trip, and they don’t get as hot on your feet compared to neoprene shoes.

We’ll be spending one night in a tent, so you’ll need to bring a summer sleeping bag for this. Sleeping pads will be provided.

Shared equipment and sleeping bags will be transported by the support boat. Everything else you need to bring must fit in the kayak, so pack wisely. You’ll be provided with packing bags totaling 30 liters to hold your luggage.

It’s possible to bring your own paddle if you wish. Note that this should be sent as extra luggage - not all airlines allow paddles in the cabin.
