Trekking in Georgia

Rich days, orange wine and delicious food in the Caucasus

From USD 4522

Hiking in the Caucasus offers beautiful scenery, exciting culture, beautiful mountains and delicious food - without traveling too far away. Among other things, the country is famous for its orange wine! Over the course of a few days, we'll go on a great hike and experience the very best of exciting Georgia.

The trip in July is fully booked due to flight deadlines, but get in touch if you want to join us and we'll check if there are still flights and rooms available.

Highlights

  • Hiking in the Caucasus
  • Stepantsminda (formerly Kazbegi)
  • Day hike up to the foot of Mt. Kazbek
  • Tbilisi
  • Exciting culture

We start in Tbilisi, a city with a mix of religious and cultural attractions. After a tour of the city, we travel to the mountains and here we meet green, grassy mountainsides, flower meadows and snow-capped, alpine peaks. The hiking days are pleasant, there are few other people in the area, and on the hike from Roshka over the Chaukhi Pass to Juta, our packs are carried by horses. We hike for four days, and from the trail and the peaks we visit we have beautiful views of large parts of the Caucasus. Eventually we set course for the town of Stepantsminda, where we stay in a lovely high-mountain hotel and enjoy the view of Mt. Kazbek (5054 m).

Day 3:The hike starts

After breakfast we travel to Roskha in the Khevsureti region. The drive takes about four hours and the last part of the road takes us quite high up in the mountains. From Roskha it is a great two-hour mountain hike up to the small Abudelauri lakes located on the southeast side of Chaukhi (3842 m) – a small mountain massif that many compare to the Dolomites or Patagonia. We stay in tents about 2500 meters above sea level, surrounded by beautiful, green mountain slopes. Here we have dinner and enjoy the landscape.

Day 4:Over the Chauki-pass

From the Abudelauri camp the hike continues over the Chaukhi pass. From here we can see large parts of the Caucasus, including the 5054 meter high Mt. Kazbek. The last part of the hike is in a bright green valley, where we set up camp between Peak Mukhadze (3289 m) and Chaukhi, where we will stay for 2 nights. A beautiful campsite with fantastic views. The entire hike takes about 7 hours. It is steep in places, but we walk slowly and enjoy the view and the powerful nature.

For departures with Norrøna Adventure guide:

  • 24-hour emergency preparedness
  • Guides with first aid training in the field
  • Basic first aid equipment available
  • Collaboration with Turlegen.no for medical advice

On our trips, it's important to understand that we often go off the beaten track. Of course, we will do everything we can to assist if something happens, but a rescue operation can be demanding. It is therefore extremely important that all participants are well prepared and ready to handle unforeseen situations.

Physical level

3/6 Physical

Some segments of the journey may prove challenging. It's essential to possess a solid level of fitness prior to departure. Persistence will be required in reaching the trip's goal.

Comfort level

2/6 Comfort

We overnight in tents. We are usually served food, but may have to contribute with cooking on certain occasions.

Risk level

3/6 Risk

Activities/trips with some risk. Certain incidents may occur, and they may be of such a nature that they may require professional help.

Training and Preparations

We go hiking for a total of five days. The longest daily stages are up to 7-8 hours. The climb on the two longest days is 1000 meters. You should be used to hiking and in good physical shape to participate. As there is some ascent and descent on the trip, it can be tough on the knees.

Some people also find it more tiring to hike at altitude, where the air is slightly thinner than at sea level (the highest point on the trip is 3360 meters above sea level). Longer hikes in the fields and, for example, "cabin to cabin" or camping trips in the mountains are a good way to recharge for the trip.

Visas, Vaccines and Health

Before we embark on our journey together, we remind all trip participants to check their respective countries' visa status and vaccination requirements. Making sure their travel documents are in order is an important step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure.

Norwegian citizens  do not need a visa for Georgia, only a valid passport that is valid for more than 6 months after returning to their home country. See also the current entry and visa regulations on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' country pages.

If you are over 67, you should have a thorough medical check-up before your trip. Make the doctor aware that this is a trip with physical exertion and where we move off the beaten track. It is important that you complete all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of before and during the trip. Relevant health information that may affect the tour must also be communicated to the guide at the start of the tour.

See the overview on FHI´s pages on travel health advice. For vaccination and guidance, please contact Sentrum Reisemedisin: Reisemedisin.no.

Additional Information

For trips where flights are not included, please check our website to confirm that the departure is guaranteed before booking your own plane tickets. For each trip, we require a minimum number of confirmed participants before the departure can be guaranteed.

On the mountain trip, we stay three nights in tents, and have horses that carry most of the packing. In addition, we have a larger mess tent where we have breakfast and dinner. On the mountain trip, we'll have a packed lunch with us.

It's not always easy to get hold of gluten-free wholemeal bread, lactose-free alternatives or to accommodate other food preferences. Please let us know in the registration form if you have any allergies and we will try to accommodate as best we can. However, we would recommend those with special food needs to bring some alternatives in the form of, for example, a packet of crispbread, energy bars or similar that you know you can eat.

This list is intended as a guideline, so that we have what we need regardless of the weather we get on the trip. Remember that you can also get used outdoor equipment that works perfectly. Footwear
Equipment

Light. Have to be foldable or telescope.

Remember new/extra batteries.

Toilet paper, antibac, and waste bags for the paper. Remember leave no trace.

Packing Tips

In Tbilisi it can get up to 40 C in the summer. We have to expect temperatures down to zero degrees and changing weather in general on the mountain tour. Very normal with afternoon showers in the middle of the day in summer. Remember to pack waterproofs in the duffel bag as well, as these are transported on horseback while we walk. If you do a lot of hiking in general, a good tip would be to buy waterproof packing bags of between 5-15 liters that you pack your equipment and clothes in. These make everyday life a little easier and tidier on a trip.

Everyone must bring their own sleeping mat.

Luggage we don't need for the hike can be left in Tblisi. We primarily need hiking clothes for the hike, but some people choose to bring a light afternoon outfit for the evening at the hotel in Stepantsminda. Maximum weight in the bag carried by the horses on tour: 14 - 16 kilos.

We recommend bringing a rain cover for the daypack.

Cans of hot water will be provided in the mornings at camp, so everyone can take a quick wash of face and hands. For the tough ones, you can often wash yourself in some small streams near the camps.
