This remarkable round-trip hike guides you through high mountain passes, picturesque valleys, charming villages, rustic mountain chalets, and inviting restaurants. Along the way, you'll be treated to breathtaking vistas of some of the region's mightiest mountains and colossal glaciers.

Day 2:First Trail Day

We start with a short bus ride to Les Houches and take the lift up to Bellevue (1781 m). The first stage gives a good impression of the magnificent surroundings that await us throughout the week, and from the top of the lift we walk for about eight hours in hilly terrain to the mountain hut (today's highest point is about 2000 m), Refuge de Nant Borrant (1460 m) where we are going to spend the night. Along the way, we get a magnificent view of the Bionnassay glacier from a "Nepalese suspension bridge", we pass the famous chapel "Notre Dam de la Gorge" and the last stretch towards the chalet we follow an ancient, Roman road.

Day 3:Over Passes to Panoramic Views

Another great – and the longest – leg of the trip awaits us this day. We will cross two passes, Col de la Croix (2483 m) and Col de Fours (2665 m), on our way down to La Ville des Glaciers (1789 m). If we are lucky with the weather, we have a panoramic view of several of the surrounding mountains (including Mont Pourri 3779 m), and the whole stage takes about eight hours. We spend the night in a charming mountain chalet.

Day 4:To Italy

Today we pack overnight clothes in our rucksack, because the luggage transport cannot reach us tonight. From the chalet, we go up to the Col de la Seigne (2516 m), one of the most beautiful mountain passes on the route. The pass forms the border between France and Italy - and here we are really close to the peaks Mont Blanc, Noire de Peutrey and Grand Jorasses! After taking in the panoramic view, we descend to the end of the Mirage glacier in Val Veni and jump on a local bus to Courmayeur (1306 m), where we have a lunch break and enjoy good Italian coffee. After lunch we take the bus a little further and go from Val Ferrett up approx. 400meters in altitude to the mountain chalet, where we spend the night.

Day 5:Onward to Switzerland

Yesterday we went from France to Italy, and now the trip continues to Switzerland. It is relatively easy walking in the morning, before we start the ascent to Col Du Ferrett (2537 m). Here we say "Arriverderci" to Italy and descend to the village of La Fouly (1594 m above sea level), where we are greeted by a beautiful cultural landscape with animals, cedars and beautiful flower meadows. We stretch our legs at a cafe in La Fouly before finding our accommodation for the night. Depending on whether we stay in La Fouly or Champex, we either take a local bus in the afternoon to Champex and spend the night there, or we spend the night in La Fouly and take the local bus to Champex the next morning.

Day 6:Back to France

We start walking in Champex (1466 m), surrounded by Swiss cows and beautiful Swiss cultural landscapes. Today's destination is Trient (1279 m). We begin with a gentle walk along the road before tackling steep forested hills. Eventually, we’re rewarded with stunning views of a landscape that feels quite different from what we’ve seen so far on the trek. This is part of the original TMB route. We cross the wooded mountain toward Trient (1279 m), passing the beautifully situated mountain café at Alpage de Bovine along the way. In Trient, a private taxi will be waiting to take us back to France and our accommodation for the night.

In a couple of places, the mountain sides are relatively steep, and we get the help of ladders to help us ascend. We have a panoramic view towards Mt Blanc on the opposite side of the valley, and the trip goes via the famous Lac Blanc before we wander down through the forest to the center of Chamonix. For departures with Norrøna Adventure guides:

  • 24-hour emergency response
  • Guides trained in first aid in the field
  • Basic first aid equipment available
  • Cooperation with Turlegen.no for medical advice

On our trips, it is important to understand that we often will be traveling far off the beaten track. We will, of course, do everything we can to assist if anything should happen, but a potential rescue operation can be demanding. It is therefore extremely important that all participants arrive well-prepared and ready to handle unforeseen situations.

Physical level

3/6 Physical

Some segments of the journey may prove challenging. It's essential to possess a solid level of fitness prior to departure. Persistence will be required in reaching the trip's goal.

Comfort level

3/6 Comfort

Simple accommodations, such as cabins or guesthouses, often with multi-bed rooms. Sometimes with bunk beds and often with a shared bathroom.

Risk level

3/6 Risk

Activities/trips with some risk. Certain incidents may occur, and they may be of such a nature that they may require professional help.

Training and Preparations

The week trip around Mont Blanc is relatively tough - with many relatively long ascents and descents. We walk six days in a row and often at an altitude of between 2000 and 3000 metres.

A normal stage is around 8 hours, and on several of the days we have more than 1000 meters of ascent. We get luggage transport between all accommodations, except for one night. Thus, most days we only go with a daypack.

You should be used to walking and in normal good physical shape to participate. Longer hikes in the countryside and, for example, multiday backpacking trips  in the mountains are good preparations for such a trip.

Visas, Vaccinations and Health

Before embarking on our journey together, we kindly remind all trip participants to check their respective country's visa status and vaccination requirements. Ensuring your travel documents are in order is a crucial step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure.

Norwegian citizens do not need a visa to enter France. Bring your passport and a copy of your passport. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months after the date of return. See also the current entry and visa regulations on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' country pages, or check for your country's current visa rules.

If you are over 67 years old, you should have a thorough medical check-up before your trip. Make your doctor aware that this is a trip involving physical exertion and moving off the beaten track.

It is important that you complete all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of prior to and during the trip. Relevant health information that may affect the trip should also be communicated to the guide at the start of the trip. *Note* - If you are on regular medication, have known allergies or anything similar, you must always bring your personal medication with you.

See the overview on FHI´s pages on travel health advice. For vaccination and guidance, please contact Sentrum Reisemedisin: Reisemedisin.no.

Additional Information

For trips where flights are not included, please check our website to confirm that the departure is guaranteed before booking your own plane tickets. For each trip, we require a minimum number of confirmed participants before the departure can be guaranteed.

We stay two nights at a hotel in Chamonix, where we start and end the trip. Along the way, we stay in mountain chalets which are relatively simple, and we live in dormitories.

There is not necessarily access to shower facilities in all the mountain chalets. In the hotels we stay at, we stay in twin/double rooms. At the hotels, it is possible to book single rooms, if they have them available.

It is not always easy to get hold of gluten-free wholemeal bread, lactose-free alternatives or to accommodate other food preferences. If you have any allergies, please let us know in the registration form and we will try to accommodate you as best we can. However, we would still recommend that anyone with special dietary needs bring some alternatives in the form of, for example, a packet of crispbread, energy bars or similar that you know you can eat.

This list is intended as a guideline, so that we have what we need regardless of the weather we get on the trip. Remember that you can also get used outdoor equipment that works perfectly. Packing Tips

We recommend bringing soap/shampoo in a small travel size for use in the mountain chalets, as well as a small towel that dries quickly. On the September departures, it can be comfortable with a thin sleeping bag. Check the weather forecast before you travel.

If you have allergies or special dietary needs, it may be good to buy and bring some extra food from Chamonix and from the villages along the way. We cannot guarantee that the chalets have food to cover special food needs. Although we notify the chalets in advance, this should be communicated to each individual cabin when you arrive.

One night we do not get luggage transport. Therefore, make sure you have a daypack big enough for some toiletries and an extra change for this one night.

Testimonial

An absolutely fantastic trip through three countries. The tour was very well and professionally organized; we received great information every step of the way and felt truly looked after. Our guide was also incredible and handled everything brilliantly, making sure everyone was doing well throughout the journey. The scenery and landscapes are simply extraordinary, and arriving at new villages and mountain huts each day with plenty of delicious food served was so exciting. Highly recommended!

Testimonial

Lovely hiking around Mont Blanc; well-proportioned daily stages and brilliantly organized with transport past the somewhat dull transfer stretches. A large group of 16 people can be challenging, but it quickly worked itself out. Top-notch guiding by Måns and Håvard!
