Kayaking in Croatia

Crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea

Kayaking in Croatia

Crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea

From USD 3061

There are many ways to experience the Adriatic, but kayaking has to be the best. Join us on a kayaking trip to the beautiful Elafiti Islands outside Dubrovnik! We'll paddle from island to island, visit underwater caves, swim in crystal-clear water and explore the islands both on land and at sea.

Highlights

  • Beautiful Elafiti Islands
  • Beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters
  • Snorkeling and underwater caves
  • Historic Dubrovnik

The coastline around Dubrovnik is known for its beautiful islands and crystal clear waters. Imagine gliding slowly forward into the sunset - not a sound from anything but the oars breaking the mirror-like surface. Surrounding you are the warm limestone cliffs, creating undulating red shadows in the water.

We've chosen two bases for this trip; one on the island of Lopud and the other on the neighboring island of Sipan. In between paddling sessions, there will be time for relaxation, exploring the villages we're staying in and hiking to high points with striking views. We finish with a trip to historic Dubrovnik.

Day 1:Departure from Norway

We are traveling towards Croatia and land at the airport south of Dubrovnik. From there, we will be picked up by minibuses and driven to our accommodation in Slano, where we will have dinner and get to know each other. We will talk a little about the days ahead and make set a plan for tomorrow.

Day 2:Jakljan and Sipanska Luka

The day begins at the breakfast table, where we eat, plan our day, and pack. Today we’ll visit the largely uninhabited and exceptionally beautiful island of Jakljan. We test the water temperature and play around in the kayaks while our local guide prepares the packed lunch we brought along. We eat a little and look around what could have been a popular tourist hub on the island if an unresolved conflict from the 30-year-old civil war in Yugoslavia hadn’t put a stop to the investment plans. We paddle from untouched Jakljan to the quiet but often-visited harbor of Sipanska Luka. Here we’re served a delicious dinner and replenish our energy reserves.

Day 3:Paddling to Sudurad and visiting an underwater cave

Today’s kayaking trip takes us along the west coast of the island of Sipan. We’ll visit a beautiful rock arch—famous as a starting point for cliff divers who aren’t afraid of heights. From there, we’ll head to the lush underwater cave off Sipan. Here we’ll break out our snorkels and masks so we can explore both the light and the underwater life. The rocks around the cave are also great for jumping and diving for those who enjoy that sort of thing. After lunch in the charming fishing village of Sudurad, we’ll leave the kayaks behind and bike back to Sipanska Luka (6 km). Along the way, there’s plenty of history and scenic viewpoints with churches and chapels, as well as the chance to taste the local grapes growing right by the roadside. For those who don’t like cycling, there’s a local bus. Before dinner, you can go for a swim, relax with a cold drink, explore Luka, or take a hike to a hilltop with a great view.

Day 4:Cycling to Sudurad, kayaking to Sunj, hiking to Lopud

After breakfast, we check out of our hotel on Sipan and let our Croatian friends transport our luggage to the neighboring island of Lopud. We cycle to Sudurad (6 km) and paddle around the west side of Lopud to the large beach at Sunj. Here we’ll have lunch and relax on the beach for as long as we like, before walking back to Lopud town on the opposite side of the island (20 minutes). In the afternoon, you can relax in Lopud town, swim and sunbathe, or explore the island on one side or the other. Whatever you choose, we’ll meet up again for dinner and end the day together.

Day 5:Kayaking around Kolocep and a visit to the Blue Grotto

This is the toughest day of paddling, but also the day with by far the most spectacular cave experience. The Blue Cave on the island of Kolocep is almost invisible at high tide, but the light underwater is a truly magical dark blue. We eat our packed lunch in a pleasant hiking area far to the south of the island. From the southernmost points, we have a great view of the bustling harbor and the old town of Dubrovnik, but as soon as we turn north again, we are far away from the city’s hustle and bustle. This day of paddling lasts a little longer, and the afternoon light as we walk back to Lopud town is simply beautiful. The trip back to Lopud town takes about 25 minutes.

Day 6:Free Day

You can spend this day however you like. For those who never tire of being active, our Norwegian guide offers both instruction and skill training in kayaking on this day. Would you like to learn the Eskimo roll in warm water and comfortable conditions? Maybe you need to practice turning techniques, self-rescue, support strokes, or buddy rescue? Perhaps you’d like to learn to surf the waves if conditions allow? You can also take the ferry to Dubrovnik for sightseeing and shopping, or relax in the town of Lopud or Sunj. In the afternoon, our guide will take those who wish to go to Lopud’s highest point, where we’ll enjoy a stunning view of Dubrovnik and the mainland, as well as Kolocep, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro.

Day 8:Dubrovnik and Departure

We’ll take an early ferry into Dubrovnik, have breakfast together upon arrival, and spend the day exploring the city. Dubrovnik offers history, shopping, and activities for everyone. How about a stroll along the city walls, or exploring the exciting city streets? A cable car ride up to the city hill? A boat trip to Cavtat with stand-up paddleboarding? After a day in Dubrovnik, our Croatian friends return with our luggage and drive us to the airport. A wonderful week is over, and we regret not booking a later return flight. Depends on where home is, we arrive home today. On group tours we arrive together in Oslo. Thank you for this time!

Safety & Grading

For departures with Norrøna Adventure guides:

  • 24-hour emergency response
  • Guides trained in first aid in the field
  • Basic first aid equipment available
  • Cooperation with Turlegen.no for medical advice

On this trip, it is important to understand that we will be traveling far off the beaten track. We will of course do everything we can to assist if anything should happen, but any rescue operation could take longer than on other trips we organize. It is therefore extremely important that all participants are well prepared and ready to deal with unforeseen situations.

Physical level

2/6 Physical

We need to exert some effort to reach our destination. With a good level of fitness and determination, these journeys are manageable for the majority of participants. Being active in daily life is a beneficial preparation.

Comfort level

4/6 Comfort

Simple to good quality inns, such as small family hotels, B&Bs and agrotourism (farmhouses), usually with private bathrooms.

Risk level

2/6 Risk

Activities/trips with little risk. There are usually few incidents and they are usually of such a nature that they can be dealt with locally.

Training and Preparations

You should have some previous kayaking experience, but you don't need a wet card to join the tour. However, you'll get more out of the tour if you've paddled before. There will be some activity during the week, so you should be in reasonably good shape to take part.

We use a mix of double and single kayaks. It's heavier to paddle in a single kayak, so we have the opportunity to switch it up a bit along the way. The double kayaks tend to become more popular throughout the week.

The first 3 paddling days we carry our own luggage in the kayaks, so pack sensibly.

If you want to become more confident in a kayak before the trip, you can sign up for a basic or intro course in sea paddling that Norrøna Hvitserk organizes at Lysaker (1 or 2 days, see our trip calendar).

Visas, Vaccines and Health

Before we embark on our journey together, we remind all trip participants to check their respective countries' visa status and vaccination requirements. Making sure their travel documents are in order is an important step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure.

Norwegian citizens do not need a visa to enter Croatia, but be sure to bring a valid passport and a copy of it. See also the current entry and visa regulations on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' country pages.

If you are over 67, you should have a thorough medical check-up before your trip. Make your doctor aware that this is a trip involving physical exertion and moving off the beaten track.

It is important that you complete all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of prior to and during the tour. Relevant health information that may affect the tour should also be communicated to the guide at the start of the tour. *Note* - If you are on regular medication, have known allergies or anything similar, you must always bring your personal medication with you.

See the overview on FHI´s pages on travel health advice. For vaccination and guidance, please contact Sentrum Reisemedisin: Reisemedisin.no.

Additional Information

Weather and wind will determine the daily stages, and the guides will assess before each day whether there is a need to make changes to the stage.

We stay in guesthouses and hotels along the way, in shared double rooms. For the first three days of paddling, we only have the luggage we need for these three days in the kayaks. After this, we get all our luggage back and it will be transported between accommodations, so you only need to carry yourself and what you need during the day.

It is not always easy to get hold of gluten-free wholemeal bread, lactose-free alternatives or to accommodate other food preferences. If you have any allergies, please let us know in the registration form and we will try to accommodate you as best we can. However, we would still recommend that anyone with special dietary needs bring some alternatives in the form of, for example, a packet of crispbread, energy bars or similar that you know you can eat.

Equipment list

This list is intended as a guideline, so that we have what we need regardless of the weather we get on the trip. Remember that you can also get used outdoor equipment that works perfectly. Get in touch if you have any questions. TIP: We recommend that you have the most important equipment in your hand luggage, for example hiking boots and gore-tex jacket/trousers.

We recommend thin wool.

Packing Tips

For the first 3 days of paddling we will be carrying our own luggage in our own kayak, so keep this in mind when packing your bag from Norway.

During the second half of September, temperatures are likely to be between 22-28 degrees during the day, and around 15-18 degrees at night. We can expect some wind from time to time, and there may be a shower.

Testimonial

Despite the bad weather (a lot of wind), it turned out to be a great and unforgettable holiday week with plenty of paddling. We got to test our limits in rough weather, went hiking in the mountains, and also found time for relaxation and sunbathing. A huge thank you to our safe, extremely experienced guides who made excellent decisions! I can absolutely recommend a paddling holiday in the Elaphiti Islands! This will not be my last trip!
