After a relaxing breakfast at Kalhovd, you’ll lace up your boots and continue your journey across the plateau, heading east toward Mårbu. Today’s trail is gentler in elevation and follows the shoreline of Lake Mår almost the entire way—offering a peaceful, waterside hike. The cabin you’re headed to, Mårbu, takes its name from this very lake, and has long served as accommodation for hikers traveling through this quiet part of Hardangervidda. Upon arrival, you’ll settle into the warm atmosphere of the lodge and enjoy a well-earned three-course dinner, rounding off the day with local flavors and calm views over the water.

Day 5:Heart of the Plateau – Mårbu to Lågaros

After breakfast at Mårbu and packing your lunch for the day, you’ll set off on the longest hike of the trip—a 25 km journey deeper into the Hardangervidda. The terrain remains mostly gentle, with some moderate ascents and descents. As you make your way toward Lågaros, you’ll begin to feel the true remoteness of Hardangervidda—far from roads, towns, and distractions. This is the middle of the plateau, where the silence is complete, and the sense of space is unlike anywhere else. Tonight’s stay is in the unmanned DNT cabin at Lågaros, where dinner will be prepared from the self-service provisions—or, if luck is on our side, from freshly caught mountain trout. Either way, it’s a fitting and humble end to a long day in North Europe's biggest mountain plateau.

Physical level

4/6 Physical

Here you have to be ready for a real challenge! The trips are often longer than at lower levels. Along the way, it will be both physically and mentally demanding, and that requires you to be prepared for this. You should engage in targeted training well in advance of departure, and you must prepare well.

Comfort level

2/6 Comfort

We overnight in tents. We are usually served food, but may have to contribute with cooking on certain occasions.

Risk level

3/6 Risk

Activities/trips with some risk. Certain incidents may occur, and they may be of such a nature that they may require professional help.

Training and preparations

This trip across the vast Hardangervidda requires a solid base level of fitness and some experience with multi-day hikes in mountainous terrain. Expect to carry a backpack with your personal gear for the duration of the trip. Daily distances range from 15 to 20 kilometers, often over uneven and rocky terrain. Prior hiking experience is highly recommended, especially in changing weather conditions.

We recommend training hikes with a loaded backpack and getting comfortable walking in a variety of conditions. Being mentally prepared for long days in potentially rough weather will make the experience more enjoyable.

Accomodation

Throughout the trip, we stay in classic DNT cabins—ranging from staffed to self-service huts. These cabins offer a warm and cozy place to rest, with bunk beds, communal spaces, and traditional Norwegian mountain atmosphere.

Other information

This is a true backcountry experience, and we are likely to be without mobile reception for parts of the journey. Your guide carries emergency communication equipment and is trained in wilderness first aid.

The weather in Hardangervidda can change quickly—even in summer—so proper clothing and good equipment are essential. We will send out a full equipment list and offer advice on what to bring during a pre-trip info session.

This trip suits those who are looking for a meaningful nature experience and want to challenge themselves in one of Norway’s most iconic landscapes.

How to get there

Travel to Oslo by international flights. Oslo Gardermoen Airport is the main gateway to our country with good connections to all the major airports in Europe and several in the Middle East. You will also find direct flights to Oslo from several cities in United States with for example SAS and Norse Atlantic Airways, and direct flights from China and Thailand.
