On the Jordan Trail, we go from camp to camp and we sleep under a magical starry sky. After the final visit to Petra, we continue to the famous Wadi Rum, the desert area close to the border with Saudi Arabia. Here we will climb the country's highest mountain, Jebel Um Ad Dami at 1,800 meters above sea level. Physical level

2/6 Physical

We need to exert some effort to reach our destination. With a good level of fitness and determination, these journeys are manageable for the majority of participants. Being active in daily life is a beneficial preparation.

Comfort level

2/6 Comfort

We overnight in tents. We are usually served food, but may have to contribute with cooking on certain occasions.

Risk level

2/6 Risk

Activities/trips with little risk. There are usually few incidents and they are usually of such a nature that they can be dealt with locally.

Traning and Preparations

The Jordan Trail is a moderately demanding hike where we have stages of 14 to 18 kilometers for five days, sometimes uphill. We follow paths and old shepherds' tracks, and only for a short distance on the fourth day of the walk will it be necessary to use your hands to get over the large sandstones, but nothing demanding.

The pace is relatively slow, we are in no hurry to get to camp. This is managed by Norraøna Adventure's guide in consultation with the local guide. Along the way, there is of course room to stop and enjoy nature, look at the view or take photographs. You only carry the daypack yourself, the rest of the luggage is transported between camps.

Although there are a number of uphill slopes and great views, those with a fear of heights need not worry - the paths are wide enough that you do not have to walk along the edge.

It is a great advantage to have been hiking a lot in rough terrain. You should be used to walking and in normal good physical shape to participate. The better your basic fitness, the more benefit you will get from your hike. Longer hikes in the fields or camping trips in the mountains is good preparation.

Visas, Vaccinations and Health

Before embarking on our journey together, we kindly remind all tour participants to check their respective country's visa status and vaccination requirements. Ensuring your travel documents are in order is a crucial step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure.

On this trip, tourist visa for Jordan is included, this will be arranged on arrival in Jordan.

If you are over 67, you should have a thorough medical check-up before your trip. Make your doctor aware that this is a trip involving physical exertion and moving off the beaten track.

It is important that you fill in all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of before and during the trip. Relevant health information that may have an impact on the tour must also be communicated to the guide at the start of the tour. NOTE - If you are on regular medication, have known allergies or the like, you must always have your personal medication with you.

Additional Information

It is important to check on our website whether the departure is guaranteed or not before you book flights to Jordan. On each departure, we must have a minimum number of confirmed participants before we can guarantee the departure.

We sleep in two-person tents and simple cabins during the hike, and in shared double rooms in hotels. With the exception of Dana, here we have a selection of double rooms and triple rooms.

The food consists of rice and chicken dishes, pita bread, salad and various local specialities. It is not always easy to get hold of gluten-free wholemeal bread, lactose-free alternatives or to accommodate other dietary requirements. Enter in the registration form if you have allergies and we will try to accommodate as best we can. We would still recommend that those who have special dietary needs bring some alternatives, like a packet of crackers, energy bars or similar that you know you can eat.

Day 2:Weightless in the Dead Sea

After breakfast and group meeting at the hotel, we have a quick sightseeing tour of Madaba. This is a city of about 60,000 inhabitants best known for its Byzantine mosaic map of the Holy Land. From here, we have around two hours' drive to the lowest point on earth, the Dead Sea, which lies 400 meters below sea level. The salts and minerals here is supposed to have a very healing effect, and as we will note, it is so salty that you can lie on your back in the water and read a good book. It is almost impossible to sink! We take our time for a dip here and have lunch before continuing inland again for another two-hour bus journey. We arrive at the village of Dana, which will be our starting point for the next days hike on the Jordan Trail. Dana is located at an altitude of 1,200 metres, on the edge of the large natural gorge Wadi Dana with fantastic views. We eat dinner together and prepare for the coming hardships.

Day 3:The hike on the Jordan Trail begins

After breakfast, we set off on foot west in the direction of Mansoura for the first leg of the Jordan Trail, a relatively newly opened hike that is already considered one of the world's most beautiful hikes. Here we walk along mountain sides with a glorious view of the valley in the Dana Reserve, Jordan's largest national park, with four different biotopes, which means a surprisingly large variety in both animal life, plant life and bird life. In the late afternoon, we arrive at the first of this weeks wilderness camps, and here a long-awaited dinner also awaits us. In all tent camps, we have both a portable toilet and a "washing tent" where there is access to hot water, soap and privacy.

Day 4:On the Jordan Trail

Today we continue south and have another stage of around one and a half miles ahead of us. We will hike through valleys overlooking Wadi Araba as we head in the direction of Furon. In front of us we have mountains that we wind our way up quite steeply with a brilliant panoramic view at the back, and along the way we eat a packed lunch. At the end of the day, we arrive at the camp that our good, local helpers have already set up for us.

Day 5:On the Jordan Trail

Today's stage continues south into one of Jordan's most remote wilderness areas at the Sharah Mountains, mainly following the old Bedouin herding tracks. The peaks of the black mountains that almost hang over our path, and the view of the gorges and valleys below us, make this perhaps the most spectacular days of the trip. We move higher and higher in the terrain, which in turn leads to an increasingly beautiful view of the desert landscape below us. The last leg is a lot of downhill to our camp for the night, where our local crew is well underway with tonight's dinner.

Day 6:On the Jordan Trail

After breakfast, we slowly begin to move out of the completely deserted areas we walked through yesterday - on today's stage we will increasingly see Bedouin camps, sheep enclosures and patches of cultivated land. In this region between Ba'ja and Little Petra, we also pass ruins of the buildings of the Nabateans - this was a highly developed Arab people who lived in the region and had Petra as their capital - and here we can come across ancient wine and olive presses, aqueducts and other infrastructure. Today we visit Little Petra, which archaeologists assume was a kind of suburb of Petra, where traders could spend the night before continuing on the famous Silk Road that linked Asia to Africa, Europe and Arabia. Here we can see the facades of the homes and other buildings that have been carved straight out of the sandstone mountains. We spend the night in simple cabins where we eat dinner around the campfire under the starry sky.

Day 7:Legendary Petra

We get ready for the last leg of the Jordan Trail after breakfast. Today we will leave M'aysrah and arrive at Petra via the little-used "back door" and thus avoid 90% of all other tourists. There are fine roads through Wadi Ghurab between the sandstone mountains that guard the entrance to Petra. This road follows an ancient Nabatean path out of the valley and winds around the last mountain on a natural rock ledge that has been secured in recent years. Nevertheless, it becomes increasingly narrow before reaching a hidden plateau high above the gorge that makes up Wadi Siyyagh. Suddenly we catch sight of the iconic "monastery" carved right into the rock face. We descend here, and from here ancient Nabatean paths lead down to legendary Petra, where we can follow the main path to Wadi Musa and continue to our accommodation for the night.

Day 8:Wadi Rum

After breakfast, we have a two-hour drive from Petra to the Wadi Rum desert, where we are taken on a 4-hour jeep safari where we get close to Wadi Rum's dunes, valleys and deserts, where sandstone formations stick out of the sand. The silence here is palpable. At each stop there is an opportunity to stroll around on your own and absorb the emotional impressions and atmosphere here. We spend the night in small huts in the desert, not far from Jordan's highest mountain Um Al Dami at 1,800 m above sea level. Here a lovely Bedouin dinner awaits us, which we eat under a starry sky you've hardly seen anywhere else - when you're so far away from civilization and the lights of the city, the stars in the night sky shine like sapphires on black velvet.

Day 9:Mountain and beach

Today we are going to the top of Jordan's highest mountain. Jebel Um Ad Dami is 1,800 meters above sea level, but we probably don't spend more than three hours up and down. From here, we get a completely new perspective on the desert that surrounds us, and to the south we can see the border with Saudi Arabia, just a couple of kilometers away. Once back down we have one last lunch in the desert before packing up and driving to Aqaba, which is Jordan's fifth largest city and the only one with a port. In Aqaba we check into our hotel and have just over a day at our disposal. The beaches here are fantastic, but it is the snorkeling in the Red Sea that is perhaps Aqaba's biggest draw. Or how about joining a boat with a glass bottom where you can see life on the seabed, or go fishing?

Packing tips

It is usually hot and sunny during the day, and cool in the evenings. The temperature can vary greatly at this time of year, so we must be prepared for all temperatures, including rain and wind. On hot days, it is very important to have headgear that protects against the sun, as well as enough to drink.

Jordan is a conservative country, which we should also respect in the way we dress. This means that the clothes should cover shoulders and knees (for both women and men). In tourist places such as Petra, Wadi Rum, on the beach in Aqaba and by the Dead Sea, they are used to seeing tourists, and here a more relaxed dress code will do just fine. Swimwear is also accepted here. When we go hiking, it's okay to wear shorts.

During the hike, we live in tents, which are set up with pillows, blankets and sleeping mats (7 cm thick foam rubber mattresses). Many will want to bring their own sleeping bag.

You can choose to bring a snorkel and diving mask with you to use on your last day at the Red Sea, but these can also be rented.
