Serengeti Safari with Zanzibar Beach Holiday

From vibrant wildlife to tropical island paradise

From USD 9097 Flight included
From USD 7683 Flight not included

This is the ultimate dream trip for those who want to combine Tanzania's most spectacular wildlife experiences with total relaxation in the Indian Ocean. We take you deep into the heart of the Serengeti and up to the edge of the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater. After the safari, we recommend extending the trip with a week's beach holiday in Zanzibar. Here we exchange the safari vehicle for toe-deep sand and azure waters in Zanzibar. This is a journey of contrasts, from the golden dust of the savannah to the tropical breeze of the island. We tailor your dream trip to your wishes.

The price stated is based on the program we have described. There is room to adjust the program both up and down in price and length.

Highlights

  • The endless plains of the Serengeti and opportunities for the great migration
  • Ngorongoro Crater, also called the "eighth wonder of the world"
  • Exclusive safari experiences in the Western Corridor and Southern Serengeti
  • Pale white beaches and historic Stone Town in Zanzibar
  • Accommodation in unique camps close to nature's own sounds

The tour starts in Arusha, the gateway to Tanzania's safari kingdom. From here, the journey continues towards the legendary national parks. We have created a route that gives you the very best of the Serengeti, from the open plains in the south to the exciting Western Corridor. Here you will get up close to the enormous diversity of wildebeest, zebras, lions and cheetahs. Waking up to the sound of the savannah coming to life is an experience that leaves a deep mark.

The highlights line up as we move towards the Ngorongoro Highlands. Standing on the edge of the crater and looking down into this "Garden of Eden" is almost unreal. Down in the crater itself, the density of wild animals is among the highest in the world, and this is one of the best places to spot the rare black rhino.

After eventful days on dusty game drives, we fly from the savannah to tropical Zanzibar. A completely different world awaits here. Zanzibar offers a unique blend of rich cultural history in the narrow alleys of Stone Town and some of the world's most beautiful beaches. Here you can relax, enjoy fresh seafood, explore colorful coral reefs or just feel the warm sand between your toes.

We believe that the best travel is the one that gives you time to take in the impressions. By combining the raw natural forces of the mainland with the tranquility of Zanzibar, you get a complete African experience that you will not soon forget.

Physical level

1/6 Physical

These are our simplest tours and require minimal prior experience. On trips with this rating, the stages are relatively short and the pace is calm. We have plenty of time to enjoy the view and arrive at the day's destination. Can be carried out by anyone who likes activity and is in normal physical health.

Comfort level

5/6 Comfort

Good to high quality hotels with good meals, ambience and service. Accommodation with a special touch.

Risk level

1/6 Risk

Activities/trips with minimal risk/everyday risk (incidents that can just as easily occur in everyday life).

Seasons in the Serengeti

The Great Calf Festival (January – March): This is the peak season for the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu area. The huge herds gather on the fertile grasslands of the south to give birth to their calves. Over half a million wildebeest calves are born in just a few weeks. This naturally attracts huge numbers of predators, and the scenes that unfold on the open plains are among the most dramatic you can experience on safari.

Green Season (April – May): This is the time of the “big rains”, but for the experienced safari visitor this is a hidden gem. The landscape transforms into a verdant paradise, the air is crystal clear (perfect for photos!), and there are fewer tourists. The herds now begin their migration north and west. The rain often comes in heavy but short afternoon showers, providing a dramatic sky backdrop for the wildlife.

Grumeti and Western Corridor (June – July): During this period the migration moves towards the Western Corridor. This is the time for the dramatic crossings of the Grumeti River, where large crocodiles await the herds. This is a unique part of the Serengeti that is less visited than the central areas, giving it a more exclusive feel.

Dry Season and Mara River Crossing (August – October): The grass turns golden and dry, making it easier to spot the animals as they gather around the remaining waterholes. While much of the migration moves north towards the Masai Mara, the "residents" (lions, leopards and elephants that do not migrate) remain in the Serengeti and are highly visible. This is also the best time to visit the Ngorongoro Crater, as the animals are concentrated on the crater floor.

The Short Rains (November – December): In November, the herds begin their migration south again from Kenya, driven by the smell of fresh grass after the short rains. This is a lush and beautiful time when the wildlife is in constant motion, and you can witness the huge columns of animals winding across the plains towards their winter pastures in the south.

Visas, Vaccinations and Health

Before embarking on our journey together, we kindly remind all tour participants to check their respective country's visa status and vaccination requirements. Ensuring your travel documents are in order is a crucial step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure. A visa is usually required for visits to Tanzania. You can order a visa for Tanzania online before departure, or buy it at Kilimanjaro Airport for 50 US Dollars. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months after the date of return.

Norwegian citizens require a visa to Tanzania. See also the currenty entry and visa regulations on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' country pages.

If you are over 67, you should have a thorough medical check-up before your trip. Make your doctor aware that this is a trip involving physical exertion and moving off the beaten track.

It is important that you complete all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of prior to and during the tour. Relevant health information that may affect the tour should also be communicated to the guide at the start of the tour. *Note* - If you are on regular medication, have known allergies or anything similar, you must always bring your personal medication with you.

See the overview on FHI's pages on travel vaccines. For vaccination and guidance, please contact Sentrum Reisemedisin: www.reisemedisin.no.

Other information

When you leave the dusty savannah for the white sands of Zanzibar, you encounter the fascinating rhythm of the Indian Ocean. The island experiences significant tidal shifts twice a day, which completely transform the coastline.

  • At High Tide: The azure water reaches the edge of the palm trees, creating the postcard-perfect scene for swimming and snorkeling right off the beach.
  • At Low Tide: The ocean retreats several hundred meters, revealing a magical lunar landscape of coral lagoons and sandbanks. This is the perfect time for a "reef walk" to spot starfish, sea urchins, and local seaweed farmers at work.

Pro Tip: If swimming at all hours is your priority, we recommend the northern beaches of Nungwi and Kendwa, where the tidal impact is less pronounced. Elsewhere on the island, the tide offers a unique, ever-changing perspective of the sea.

This list is intended as a guideline, so that we have what we need regardless of the weather we get on the trip. Remember that you can also get used outdoor equipment that works perfectly. Recommended

Clothing
Footwear
Equipment

Toilet paper, antibac, and waste bags for the paper. Remember leave no trace.

Nuts, chocolate, energy bars, etc.

Packing tips

It is said that dark clothing, such as dark blue, black, dark green and e.g. red (in combination with human movement and breathing) can make you more visible to mosquitoes. That's why many people choose more muted natural colors such as beige, olive green, brown, etc. However, it is equally important to cover up and use mosquito repellent, especially around sunrise and sunset, when mosquitoes are most active.

A sun hat or cap is a good idea, as well as a small daypack where you can carry a water bottle and what you need for the safari. A light down jacket/windproof jacket and a good fleece sweater are nice to wear in the early mornings and late evenings, the nights often get chilly out here.

Remember a small daypack for the safari days, good for carrying a camera, extra sweater etc.
