Safari in Masai Mara and Naboisho with an unforgettable beach holiday

The big five, stunning sunsets and pristine white beaches

From USD 5915

A dream trip for those who want to experience the diverse wildlife in the beautiful, animal-rich Masai Mara National Park and Naboisho Conservancy. Here you'll stay in distinctive, high-standard accommodations that have won awards for their work in sustainable tourism. In Masai Mara and Naboisho, you'll experience African wildlife at its very best. After your safari, we recommend extending your trip with a week's beach holiday, for example along the Kenya coast or on Zanzibar. We tailor your dream trip to your wishes.

Highlights

  • Encounter with the wild savannah
  • Wildlife right outside your tent
  • Fine safari campervans with fantastic service
  • Encounter with an exciting Masai culture
  • Hiking safari (12 years age limit)
  • Bush breakfast or hot air balloon safari?
  • White beaches and beach life

We believe there are many good reasons why the Masai Mara National Park and Naboiso Conservancy are among the most popular safari destinations. The scenery is beautiful and there's exciting wildlife and great opportunities to see the Big Five. On this trip, you'll stay at two of the best safari camps in Masai Mara and Naboiso.

The Masai Mara National Park is located on the border between Kenya and Tanzania, at an altitude of approximately 2000 meters. The endless savannahs are home to wildlife that defies description. Most people plunge straight into this adventure from a jeep. Gamedrive, they call it. From our vehicles, you'll almost always experience elephants, lions, hippos, giraffes and cheetahs up close. If you want, we'll also give you the opportunity to walk alongside Masai in the midst of this diversity of animals. An exciting, wonderful and completely unique experience!

When traveling this far, we recommend staying for more than a week; both from a sustainability perspective, but also to experience more of what the country has to offer. We recommend a week's beach vacation after the safari. We usually recommend either Diani Beach along the Kenya coast, or Zanzibar. We have special prices for children on safari.

Day 2:Fly to the savannah and start your safari

Today, following your arrival to Nairobi, you start with a transfer to the local small Wilson Airport, for a short flight (often on 16-seater planes) out to the Masai Mara. For those who do not wish to fly, it is also possible to drive, which takes around 5 hours. The road here has been improved, but be prepared for a slightly bumpy ride nonetheless. When we arrive in the Masai Mara, we will be met by smiling Maasai guides who will drive us to the camp. Even on this drive, there are opportunities to see the wildlife up close. We will enjoy a delicious lunch in the shade at the camp, and settle into our tent. In the afternoon, we will head out on our first proper game drive. Have your camera ready!

Day 3:Safari and the beautiful life on the savannah

Today, the program includes classic safari in the morning and the afternoon by jeep. You plan the days on safari in consultation with your guide. It is common to head out in the morning and afternoon, and relax at the accommodation during the middle of the day (when it is hot and the animals have sought shade). Alternatively, it is possible to go on a full-day safari and eat lunch along the way.

Day 4:Safari in Naboisho

After the morning game drive and a good breakfast at the safari camp, you will continue this day to the Naboisho Conservancy—this transfer stage is often combined with a new exciting game drive. The number of tourists in this nature reserve is strictly limited, allowing you to have nearly untouched encounters with the exciting wildlife. Here you can also join a walking safari (highly recommended!). Walking on the savannah is an entirely different experience than sitting in a jeep. You will look for elephants and giraffes, search for tracks left by lions and hyenas, and learn about the wildlife from the Maasai who accompany us on the walk. Perhaps you will have lunch on the savannah and return to the camp late in the afternoon. Traditional safaris (game drives by jeep) are also available here.

Day 5:Luxury life and walking safari

We can start the day with an exciting and different walking safari. Hopefully, we will see the animals flocking around the waterholes. Children aged 12 and over may participate in the walking safari when accompanied by their parents. We look for wildlife with a camera and binoculars, and the Maasai will walk with spears for our safety. The English-speaking Maasai will teach you how to decipher tracks and signs in nature and tell exciting stories along the way. (For those with children younger than 12, the children can stay behind in the camp with one of the Maasai who will entertain them with games, drawing, etc.). As evening approaches, we can have a magical 'Sundowner,' where we watch the sun slowly set over the savannah, and we will have a game drive in the dark on the way back to the camp for dinner. It is exciting to sit and look for glowing eyes that suddenly hit the beam of the flashlight.

Safety & Grading

The Maasai guard the camp around the clock, and after dark we're escorted between our tents and the dining hall/common areas. When we're out on a walking safari, they bring spears for protection.

Physical level

1/6 Physical

These are our simplest tours and require minimal prior experience. On trips with this rating, the stages are relatively short and the pace is calm. We have plenty of time to enjoy the view and arrive at the day's destination. Can be carried out by anyone who likes activity and is in normal physical health.

Comfort level

5/6 Comfort

Good to high quality hotels with good meals, ambience and service. Accommodation with a special touch.

Risk level

1/6 Risk

Activities/trips with minimal risk/everyday risk (incidents that can just as easily occur in everyday life).

Seasons
Migration period (June - October): The migration period extends from late June to mid-October. The Great Wildebeest Migration has rightfully earned a position as one of the world's most spectacular sights. With an abundance of wildebeest, zebras and antelopes, the Great Migration constitutes the last surviving multi-species migration on the planet.

Visas, vaccinations and health

Norwegians need a valid passport with a minimum validity of 6 months after the date of return. See also the current visa rules on UD's country pages.
Kenya has abolished the visa requirement for Norwegian citizens, but you must apply for entry authorization, Travel Authorization (eTA), electronically. If you are traveling to Zanzibar, you need a visa for Tanzania. Zanzibar has now introduced mandatory travel insurance purchased from the Tanzanian government. Read more about it here.

If you're over 67, you should have a thorough medical check-up before your trip. Make the doctor aware that this is a trip where we go off the beaten track.

This is especially where we ask for information about health and allergies.

It is important that you fill out all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of before and during the trip.

See an overview on FHI's pages on travel vaccines. For vaccination and guidance, contact Sentrum Reisemedisin: www.reisemedisin.no.

Other information

We collaborate with Saruni Basecamp, which has various camps around the Masai Mara, Naboisho and Samburu in the North. Some of the camps have a slightly simpler standard with a focus on proximity to nature, while other camps are more luxurious and all-inclusive. What the camps have in common is that all meals are included, the location is spectacular, you get close to the wildlife and the service is consistently very good!

On flights between Wilson Airport (Nairobi) and Maasai Mara, there is a baggage limit of 15 kg per person in a soft bag/duffel bag. However, it is possible to store excess luggage in Nairobi, which is ideal if you're going on a beach holiday or other adventure after the safari.

Norrøna Adventure works with Basecamp Saruni (formerly Basecamp Explorer) with whom we have a good and long collaboration. The reason we work with Basecamp is first and foremost that they have very nice camps and very skilled guides, but also that they do important work with environmental and nature conservation and poverty reduction. Among other things, Basecamp runs a school that trains local Masai to become guides in the national park. In 2015, they won the "Tourism for the future Award" in the community category for their work with the local population in the Mara area.

It's not always easy to get hold of gluten-free wholemeal bread, lactose-free alternatives or to accommodate other food requests. If you have allergies, please let us know in the registration form and we will try to accommodate you as best we can. However, we would recommend those with special food needs to bring some alternatives in the form of, for example, a packet of crispbread, energy bars or similar that you know you can eat.

Equipment list

This list is intended as a guideline, so that we have what we need regardless of the weather we get on the trip. Remember that you can also get used outdoor equipment that works perfectly. Get in touch if you have any questions. TIP: We recommend that you have the most important equipment in your hand luggage, for example hiking boots and gore-tex jacket/trousers.

Obligatory

Clothing

We recommend thin wool.

Fleece or wool.

Down or synthetic insulation.

For evenings and leasure days.

Equipment

Avoid bringing a suitcase, they are more difficult to transport between hotels.

Personal medicines and, for example, band-aids, blister plaster, sports tape, throat lozenges, nasal drops, Paracetamol/Ibuprofen, stomach regulators, etc.
We need to know about all medicines you are taking, in case something happens.

Tooth brush, tooth paste, small towel, ear plugs, wet wipes, biodegradable soap, etc.

Passport, tickets, bank card, proof of vaccination andproof of insurance. Remember to have a copy of important documents on your phone and/or somewhere in your bag.

Recommended

Clothing
Footwear
Equipment

Toilet paper, antibac, and waste bags for the paper. Remember leave no trace.

Nuts, chocolate, energy bars, etc.

Packing tips

It is said that dark clothing, such as dark blue, black, dark green and e.g. red (in combination with human movement and breathing) can make you more visible to mosquitoes. That's why many people choose more muted natural colors such as beige, olive green, brown, etc. However, it is equally important to cover up and use mosquito repellent, especially around sunrise and sunset, when mosquitoes are most active.

A sun hat or cap is a good idea, as well as a small daypack where you can carry a water bottle and what you need for the safari. A light down jacket/windproof jacket and a good fleece sweater are nice to wear in the early mornings and late evenings, the nights often get chilly out here.

Remember a small daypack for the safari days, good for carrying a camera, extra sweater etc.

NB: 15kg luggage limit on the flight to Masai Mara.

Testimonial

Memorable days at Masai Mara Camp and Eagle View in the summer of 2024. We, teenage grandchildren and grandmother, would like to thank you for a fantastic vacation with safari excursions both in the morning and afternoon/evening. Three daily meals with several dishes on the menu, and cheerful and service-minded staff throughout. We felt both seen and appreciated. We had a very positive guide, John, who was “ours” from start to finish. He welcomed us at the airport and said goodbye to us at the airport after five days, and was our regular driver and guide on all the safari excursions. The Masai took very good care of us, so we felt safe at all times. The tents were more like cabins than tents, and especially at Eagle View, both the view and the tents were fantastic. We had a wonderful time from start to finish. Thank you so much!

After careful planning in collaboration with Norrøna Hvitserk, the trip turned out to be the dream vacation we wanted. When things came up that we were unsure about along the way, we got quick clarification when we contacted Hvitserk. Thank you so much for a fantastic trip.
