Safari in Masai Mara and Naboisho with an unforgettable beach holiday

Safari in Masai Mara and Naboisho with an unforgettable beach holiday

The Big 5, amazing sunsets, and pristine white beaches

A dream trip for those who want to experience the diverse wildlife in the beautiful, game-rich national park of Masai Mara and the Naboisho Conservancy. You will stay at distinctive, high-standard accommodations that have won awards for their work in sustainable tourism. In Masai Mara and Naboisho, you will experience African wildlife at its very best. After the safari, we recommend extending the trip with a week-long beach holiday, for example along the Kenyan coast or on Zanzibar. We tailor-make your dream journey according to your wishes

Highlights

  • Encounter with the wild savannah
  • Wildlife right outside your tent
  • Great safari camps with fantastic service
  • Encounter with an exciting Maasai culture
  • Walking safari (12 years age limit)
  • Bush breakfast or hot air balloon safari?
  • Pristine white beaches and beach life

We believe there are many good reasons why the Masai Mara National Park and the Naboisho Conservancy are among the most popular safari destinations. The nature is beautiful, and here you will find exciting wildlife and excellent opportunities to see 'The Big Five'. On this trip, you will stay at two of the very finest safari camps in Masai Mara and Naboisho.

Masai Mara National Park is located on the border between Kenya and Tanzania, at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters. On the endless savannahs, wildlife unfolds in a way that is almost indescribable. Most people dive right into this adventure from a jeep. This is called a game drive. From our vehicles, you almost always experience elephants, lions, hippos, giraffes, and cheetahs up close. If you wish, we also give you the opportunity to walk alongside Maasai guides right in the middle of this diverse wildlife. An exciting, wonderful, and truly unique experience!

When travelling this far, we recommend being on a trip for more than a week; both from a sustainability perspective and to experience more of what the country has to offer. We highly recommend a week-long beach holiday after the safari. We usually recommend either Diani Beach along the Kenyan coast or Zanzibar. We also offer special children's rates for the safari.

Day 2:Fly to the savannah and start your safari

Today you start with a transfer to the local small Wilson Airport, for a short flight (often on 16-seater planes) out to the Masai Mara. For those who do not wish to fly, it is also possible to drive, which takes around 5 hours. The road here has been improved, but be prepared for a slightly bumpy ride nonetheless. When we arrive in the Masai Mara, we will be met by smiling Maasai guides who will drive us to the camp. Even on this drive, there are opportunities to see the wildlife up close. We will enjoy a delicious lunch in the shade at the camp, and settle into our tent. In the afternoon, we will head out on our first proper game drive. Have your camera ready!

Day 3:Safari and the beautiful life on the savannah

Today, the program includes classic safari in the morning and the afternoon by jeep. You plan the days on safari in consultation with your guide. It is common to head out in the morning and afternoon, and relax at the accommodation during the middle of the day (when it is hot and the animals have sought shade). Alternatively, it is possible to go on a full-day safari and eat lunch along the way.

Day 4:Safari in Naboisho

After the morning game drive and a good breakfast at the safari camp, you will continue this day to the Naboisho Conservancy—this transfer stage is often combined with a new exciting game drive. The number of tourists in this nature reserve is strictly limited, allowing you to have nearly untouched encounters with the exciting wildlife. Here you can also join a walking safari (highly recommended!). Walking on the savannah is an entirely different experience than sitting in a jeep. You will look for elephants and giraffes, search for tracks left by lions and hyenas, and learn about the wildlife from the Maasai who accompany us on the walk. Perhaps you will have lunch on the savannah and return to the camp late in the afternoon. Traditional safaris (game drives by jeep) are also available here.

Day 5:Luxury life and walking safari

We can start the day with an exciting and different walking safari. Hopefully, we will see the animals flocking around the waterholes. Children aged 12 and over may participate in the walking safari when accompanied by their parents. We look for wildlife with a camera and binoculars, and the Maasai will walk with spears for our safety. The English-speaking Maasai will teach you how to decipher tracks and signs in nature and tell exciting stories along the way. (For those with children younger than 12, the children can stay behind in the camp with one of the Maasai who will entertain them with games, drawing, etc.). As evening approaches, we can have a magical 'Sundowner,' where we watch the sun slowly set over the savannah, and we will have a game drive in the dark on the way back to the camp for dinner. It is exciting to sit and look for glowing eyes that suddenly hit the beam of the flashlight.

Round-trip flights Nairobi - Masai Mara, and from Nairobi to the beach destination.

All transport as specified in the programme.

Staying in shared twin tents during the safari. Family tents are also available at the camps, but we would need to check availability for your specified dates. For the stay at the beach in Zanzibar or Diani, you will be staying at hotels, either small or large ones.

Unlimited kilometers

Not included

Tips are not included in the price. Normal practice for our travellers have been to tip around 10% in restaurants if they are satisfied, or when leaving the safari camp. Normally, a separate amount is paid for the safari guide as well; in Kenya, an estimated USD 10 - 15 per person per day is standard for the safari guide. Tipping is something you do when you are satisfied with the service! As a family, you usually pay a collective amount, often around USD 25 - 30 per family per day, in addition to leaving something in the tip box at the camps, plus around 10% for restaurant visits if the service charge is not included in the bill.

Some of the camps have all-inclusive, which will be specified in your travel offer.

Per request for an additional fee.

Applied for online before departure. And potentially a visa for Tanzania.

The Maasai keep watch in the camp around the clock. After nightfall, we are escorted between our tents and the dining hall/common areas. When we are out on a walking safari, they carry spears for protection.

Physical level

1/6 Physical

These are our simplest tours and require minimal prior experience. On trips with this rating, the stages are relatively short and the pace is calm. We have plenty of time to enjoy the view and arrive at the day's destination. Can be carried out by anyone who likes activity and is in normal physical health.

Comfort level

5/6 Comfort

Good to high quality hotels with good meals, ambience and service. Accommodation with a special touch.

Risk level

1/6 Risk

Activities/trips with minimal risk/everyday risk (incidents that can just as easily occur in everyday life).

Seasons

The Migration Period (June - October): The migration period extends from the end of June to mid-October. The Great Wildebeest Migration has rightly earned a reputation as one of the world's most spectacular sights. With an abundance of wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes, the Great Migration constitutes the last remaining multi-species migration on the planet.

The End of the Migration (October - December): The Northern Migration is an integral part of the Great Migration. After passing through the Naboisho Conservancy, the animals in the Northern Migration return to the Mara, with more than 1.5 million animals! On their way back to Lloita, the animals roam through Naboisho again, staying there until the end of the year. This period is a great time to travel to the Mara.

Christmas and New Year: From December 23rd to January 1st. Rather than being covered in white snow, the plains of the Maasai Mara are covered in black by wild animals.

The Calving Season (January - February): The great plains truly come to life during this time. The animals of the Maasai Mara calve during this period, and thousands of new four-legged citizens of the ecosystem see the light of day. The weather is usually dry and fine during this period.

The Green Season (April - June): The period in early spring is usually referred to as the Green Season, and it is a particularly wonderful time to visit the Mara. March, April, and May are the months that usually receive the largest amounts of rainfall. Nevertheless, the rain usually comes in the form of short-lived and very localized showers (even during the wettest period, only an average of 150 mm of precipitation falls per month). But this rain is enough to turn the Mara into a green oasis for a period. The people of the Mara view the rain as a blessing. Rain is just as important for people and livestock as it is for the wildlife. The search for water is the primary driving force for animals such as wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes. During the Green Season, these animals begin to return to the Mara, simply due to the smell of rain

Visas, Vaccinations and Health

We kindly remind all tour participants to check their respective country's visa status and vaccination requirements. Ensuring your travel documents are in order is a crucial step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure.

Most travelers will have to apply for an entry authorization to Kenya, or a  må søke om innreiseautorisasjon, Travel Authorisation (eTA), electronically. If you are continuing to Zanzibar, you most likely also need a visa for Tanzania. Further, Zanzibar has now introduced mandatory travel insurance purchased from the Tanzanian authorities. Read more about it here.

If you are over 67, you should have a thorough medical check-up before your trip. Make your doctor aware that this is a trip involving physical exertion and moving off the beaten track.

It is important that you fill in all parts of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about health and allergies), and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of before and during the trip. NOTE - If you are on regular medication, have known allergies or the like, you must always have your personal medication with you.

Additional information

We collaborate with Saruni Basecamp, which has various camps around Masai Mara, Naboisho, and Samburu in the North. Some of the camps have a slightly simpler standard with a focus on closeness to nature, while other camps are more luxurious and include all-inclusive. Common to the camps is that all meals are included, the location is spectacular, you get close to the wildlife, and the service is consistently very good!

On the flights between Wilson Airport (Nairobi) and the Maasai Mara, there is a baggage limit of 15 kg per person in a soft bag/duffel bag. However, it is entirely possible to store excess baggage in Nairobi, which is ideal if you are continuing on a beach holiday or other adventures after the safari.

Norrøna Adventure works with Basecamp Saruni (formerly Basecamp Explorer), with whom we have a strong and long-standing partnership. The reason we collaborate with Basecamp is primarily that they have very beautiful camps and highly skilled guides, but also that they do important work in environmental and nature conservation and poverty reduction. Among other initiatives, Basecamp runs a school that trains local Maasai to become guides in the national park. In 2015, they won the ‘Tourism for the Future Award’ in the community category for their work with the local population in the Mara area.

It is not always easy to obtain gluten-free wholemeal bread, lactose-free alternatives, or to cater to other dietary requests. Please write any allergies into the registration form so that we can try to accommodate your needs as best as possible. However, we still recommend that anyone with special dietary needs bring some alternatives in the form of, for example, a packet of crispbread, energy bars, or similar items that you know you can eat.

Equipment list

This list is intended as a guideline, so that we have what we need regardless of the weather we get on the trip. Remember that you can also get used outdoor equipment that works perfectly. Get in touch if you have any questions. TIP: We recommend that you have the most important equipment in your hand luggage, for example hiking boots and gore-tex jacket/trousers.

Obligatory

We recommend thin wool.

Fleece or wool.

Down or synthetic insulation.

For evenings and leasure days.

Packing tips

It is said that dark clothing, such as dark blue, black, dark green, and for example red (in combination with human movement and breath) can make you more visible to mosquitoes. Therefore, many choose more subdued natural colors like beige, olive green, brown, and similar shades.

However, it is just as important to cover up and use mosquito repellent, especially around sunrise and sunset, as this is when mosquitoes are most active.

A sun hat or cap is advisable, as well as a small daypack where you can carry a water bottle and what you need for the safari. A light down jacket/windproof jacket and a good fleece sweater are great to have for early mornings and late evenings, as the nights often get chilly out here.

Remember a small daypack for the safari days; it's useful for carrying your camera, an extra sweater, etc.

PS: There is a 15 kg baggage limit on the flight to the Masai Mara.

Testimonial

"Memorable days at Masai Mara Camp and Eagle View in the summer of 2024. We, teenage grandchildren and grandmother, thank you for a fantastic holiday with safari excursions both morning and afternoon/evening. Three daily multi-course meals, and constantly cheerful and service-minded employees. We felt both seen and appreciated. We had a very positive guide, John, who was 'ours' from start to finish. He welcomed us at the airport and said goodbye to us at the airport after five days, serving as our dedicated driver and walking guide on all the safari excursions. The Maasai took very good care of us, so we felt safe the entire time. The tents were more like a cabin than a tent, and especially at Eagle View, both the view and the tent were absolutely magnificent. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves from start to finish. Many thousand thanks!"

– Birgitte, 2024
