  • Beautiful alpine lakes
  • Exotic wildlife
  • Authentic cultural experience

The Chogoria Sirimon route is known as the most scenic route up Mount Kenya, offering a good balance of excitement and safety. The route allows for good acclimatization and features a gradual ascent, ensuring plenty of time to adjust to the altitude. Nights are spent in tents at peaceful campsites, surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of Africa’s second-highest mountain. The route starts on the east side and takes us through lush bamboo forests, alpine lakes, and the impressive Gorges Valley with its incredibly varied landscape. The descent along the Sirimon route is somewhat easier, and we feel our bodies and breathing become lighter the lower we go. With the expertise of the local team and the Norrøna Adventure guide, we’re confident this will be an experience of a lifetime.

For those who wish to extend the adventure, we recommend a safari in the renowned Ol Pejeta Game Reserve. Alternatively, you can explore more hiking opportunities in the lush and scenic Aberdare National Park. Feel free to contact us for suggestions.

Training and Preparations

Reaching the summit of Mount Kenya, nearly 5000 m, is a major and exciting goal! Although we believe many people can do it, it’s important to remember that it can be a tough climb, and not everyone may make it all the way to the top.

The altitude can cause some challenges, such as headaches, especially if you’re not used to being at high altitudes. But don’t worry! The skilled team of guides is there for you every step of the way, offering advice and support.

Many people wonder what it takes to go on a trip with Norrøna Adventure to high mountains. Here's an introduction to hiking at altitude - what to expect and how to prepare with the right clothing, equipment and training.

We also recommend that you read up a bit about the country and the trip you’re going on before you leave. This will make the experience even more fulfilling.

It’s a big advantage to have previous experience with mountain hikes. Participants should be in good physical shape and comfortable with multi-day hikes. Preparing with longer hikes, hut-to-hut trips, or overnight stays in the mountains is an excellent way to build endurance and get ready for this incredible adventure.

If you need any tips, we have a training plan for high mountains - feel free to ask us about it.

Visas, Vaccinations and Health

Before embarking on our journey together, we kindly remind all trip participants to check their respective country's visa status and vaccination requirements. Ensuring your travel documents are in order is a crucial step in guaranteeing a smooth and hassle-free adventure.

Norwegian citizens need a valid passport with at least 6 months of validity remaining after their return date. Visitors to Kenya must apply for a Travel Authorization (eTA) online. You can do this here: Apply for your eTA to Kenya (etakenya.go.ke). See also the current entry and visa regulations on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' country pages, or check for your country's current visa rules.

If you are over 67 years old, you should undergo a thorough medical examination before the trip. Let your doctor know that this is a trip involving physical exertion and that we’ll be traveling off the beaten path.

It is important that you fill out all sections of the registration form (especially where we ask for information about your health and allergies) and let us know if there is anything we need to be aware of before and during the trip. Relevant health information that may affect the trip should also be communicated to the guide at the start of the trip. Note: If you take regular medication, have known allergies, or similar conditions, you must always bring your personal medication with you.

See the overview at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health’s (FHI) pages on travel vaccines. For vaccinations and guidance, contact Sentrum Reisemedisin: www.reisemedisin.no.

The climate on Mount Kenya is generally warm year-round, with a rainy season in the spring and a short period between November and December. Our departures are scheduled during the optimal season to ensure the best possible experience.

If you have any allergies, please let us know in the registration form and we will try to accommodate you as best we can. However, we would still recommend that anyone with special dietary needs bring some alternatives in the form of, for example, a packet of crispbread, energy bars or similar that you know you can eat.

Packing Tips

Temperatures on Mount Kenya vary greatly depending on elevation. In the lowlands, temperatures are mild, ranging from 20–25 °C. As you ascend, daytime temperatures remain comfortable up to an altitude of 4000 meters, but drop below freezing at night starting at the first camp. During the night on the summit, temperatures can drop to -10 to -20 °C, so it’s important to bring warm clothing.

On the day hikes, we’ll carry daypacks with what we need for the hike, such as water, snacks, and a change of clothes. The rest of your luggage, limited to 15 kg, will be carried by porters from camp to camp. A basic sleeping pad is provided, but we recommend that you bring an inflatable sleeping pad for extra insulation and comfort.

Extra luggage, such as travel clothes or a change of clothes for after the trip, can be safely stored at the hotel and picked up once the mountain hike is complete.
